Patterns of Organization for Writing and Speaking
There have been elaborate patterns of organization for writing and speaking which have been resourceful in making captivating presentations. The most effective way of delivering a good presentation is to critically examine the task or topic at hand and the audience, putting in consideration a well-thought organization pattern (Wilcox, 4).
Chronological Pattern
Important patterns to consider for writing and speaking include the chronological pattern which presents information in an interrelated format whereby several concepts are presented logically. It consists of main part and subsections. The main part targets a specific concept which might be the subject of the presentation or event which is limited to a given time. Sequential patterns are also another important pattern where the organization of writing and speaking is done in a step-by-step process. In contrast to the Chronological pattern, the main part is equated to main step and subsection is equated to a sub-step.
Problem-Solution Pattern
Problem-Solution Pattern is another form of organization where the speaker identifies a given problem and explains it in the process of trying to convince the audience to agree on a particular solution (Wilcox, 18). In the process, the speaker manages to connect the problem to a given solution. The cause-and-effect pattern is also another indispensable pattern of organization that can also be used in speech organization which mainly focus on the aspect of identifying a given cause to a given situation and outlining the underlying effects. Finally, spatial patterns are also handy during writing and speech organization. Spatial speech is concerned with the geographical position. It is good for the speech about town or a country in which the speaker could be describing infrastructure in a given place or institution.
Strategies for Presenting Supporting Material
Some of the strategies that are helpful when deciding the order of presenting supporting material include primacy or recency. It might be first or last. Presenting an overview of the subject at first is important to capture the attention of the audience and to give conclusion and a summary of the information, at last, is important in presenting a recap of all that was covered. Another consideration is specificity, which can either be specific or general. Specific speech goal is to give specific information directly to a given group of audience, based on the basis of evidence rather than persuasive with accuracy while general deals more on persuasive topics that are seldom anchored on indisputable evidence. In this case, the audience is not keen on the facts of the particular subject. The complexity of the presentation is also factored in. The presentation could be simple or complex depending on the subject and audience. The topic could also be soft or hard. Soft presentations mostly deal with opinions and debatable subjects while hard presentations illustrate facts.
Key Takeaways from Public Speaking
From the presentation, I have learned that in public speaking, it is important for one to prepare previews which lists the main points and prepares the audience for the flow of the speech. Secondly, in public speaking it is important to become passionate about the subject of my speech. It is also necessary to interject my presentation with stories in order to make my audience more captivated. It is important to make adequate practice before delivering a speech (LearningREADefined). The use of illustrations and the introduction of a new idea is also an important aspect of public speaking that keeps your audience captivated. Summarization helps in reducing the amount of information and makes the presentation specific to the main subject.
