Patterns of Crimes across the USA

Numerous characteristics, including local demographics, sex, age, unemployment rates, race, and any other variables, can be used to analyze crime. Based on statistics from the year 2009, Table 1 examines the rate of decline in criminal activity by age. Comparing crime rates for female offenders between 1986 and 2009 is Table 2, on the other side. On the basis of the two tables, important information has been raised that could aid in understanding the character of crimes as well as their prevention, prediction, and solution. Table 1 summarizes the rates of decline by age of the offender for different types of crimes. Robbery, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft reported the highest rates of decline by above 50%. This percentage is a significant drop and indicates a drastic change in the lives of individuals. The most plausible explanation is that the majority of the teenagers have little idea on how they want to lead their lives and may be involved in many crimes. However, maturity brings more understanding and responsibility creates a sense of direction. Therefore, by the age of 24, people have a chance of making lesser decisions that involve crime. As Travis Hirschi says, closer relations that lead towards creation of families have a large impact on people as they grow into maturity (Hirschi 19).

Table 2 indicates the rates of change of crime between 1986 and 2009 based on gender. Typically, males are presumed to commit acts of crime more than females (Kanazawa). All crimes except murder increased in terms of female offenders. This may be explained by the gender competitiveness that has been seen in the recent past between men and women. Women are more active in previously male-dominated careers, which predisposes them to a greater exposure to crime (Siegel and Worrall 72). Therefore, the rates of their participation in crime are bound to rise.
