Social Media and Communication
Social media has revolutionized the way we communicate. It has offered a platform that enables us to instantaneously express our experiences and thoughts with relatives, peers as well as strangers globally. One of its benefits is that it allows sharing of information with a large number of individuals within the shortest time possible.
The Impact of Social Media on Long-Distance Relationships
Being in a country that is 10,000 km away from home, social media has enabled me to frequently communicate with my friends and relatives back at home. I remain connected with all the people back at home and remain in touch with my culture. This was not possible in the past one or two decades.
Drawbacks in Interpersonal Communication
The impact it has on the interpersonal communication is one of its main drawbacks. What makes up effective communication does not depend on the language. Facial expression, body language, and voice characteristics that are usually experienced during one on one communication have been replaced by smileys and emoji.
Effects on Vocabulary and Communication Skills
In addition, our vocabulary has become limited and short forms are now being widely used at the expense of nuances and subtleties of rich English language. Since conversations are all in a text, people growing at this era of technology lack communication skills. It is easier for one to answer questions in class on the phone rather than rising up the hand and speaking in front of others due to the social media influence. Although technology has ensured saving of time some cases are considered as time wasting for instance rather texting about an issues-minute call can save on both time and energy.
The Paradox of Social Media
Even though social media has ensured that we are connected than ever, we are mutually isolated.
