Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (1859-1930) may probably have lived in one of the hardest times for English and Scottish middleclass. The epoch instigated to Doyle’s mind vivid ideology of Victorian middleclass. It is during this period when the Marxist ideology is at its penetration to Englishmen that Doyle writes this book to criticize capitalistic transgressions in his land. During the 19th
Century, British middleclass were in a constant state of flux (Isokoski 3). Doyle wrote a fictional book, Adventures of Sherlock Holmes so as to portray the transgressions the middleclass suffered but also showing how immoral the society was. The series contains 12 other books which carried attracted huge favour to the author. Doyle endured significant imposition from the hard times and ended up creating one of the best detectives the world has ever seen in Sherlock Holmes (Carli 5).
Sherlock Holmes is portrayed as a genius of a detective. Through his curious, sometimes weird and dubious methods, he is able to investigate serious transgressions committed that would not have been easy for a normal detective to scrutinize (Carli 5). As Britain was at her immoral phase during the Victorian era, Holmes is faced with numerous cases to investigate. The rich exploit the poor and Holmes tries his best for the rescue of the poor. Moreover, Holmes is faced by the presence of modern women. This would have been a challenge to any other detective. However, Holmes is uncommonly cold towards women and completely distrusts women- although he distrusts almost everybody (“Sherlock Holmes and Women: His Attitude towards Women”). His work requires him to be cold and calculating.
Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is also available in television. Animated movie and series versions are available to any interested old literature enthusiast. The animated version has attempted to create a more vivid imagery of Sherlock Holmes and the underlying wanting conditions of the Victorian era. Mainly, the current study will examine the gender imbalance in the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
