Kubrick sent Colceri a memo, instructing him to memorize 28 pages of dialogue. He worked on the lines for weeks, rehearsing six days a week for twelve hours a day. By the time the film's shooting began, Colceri was ready for the part.
Kubrick's full-length film was divided into two acts. The first half of the film follows the journey of Pyle, an overweight klutz who becomes the gunnery sergeant's favorite chewee. As Pyle becomes more experienced in the field of gunmanship, he begins to appreciate the pleasures of gunmanship and a "full metal jacket," which is gunspeak for bullet casings.
