My Career Options
My two career options are to become an accountant and open up my own mobile dog grooming service. To become an accountant, most jobs require at least a bachelor’s degree. To move up in the business and earn more money you need to further your education and earn your master's degree, the highest level of accounting is becoming a CPA which will make you a senior accountant. That requires you to have to earn 150 credit for you to be eligible in most states to take the CPA exam. To own my dog grooming service the requirements are not as extensive. You first need to get your grooming license and then get the mobile grooming permit that is required in the state and city you choose to start your business.
Income Potential
The annual income for an accountant ranges from about $36,500 to $70,500 a year, but it all depends on the company size and your position in the company. The larger the company, the more your annual income will be. As a dog groomer, the annual income is about $22,000 a year. But since I will be owning the business and plan on owning more than one truck, my salary will range from $22,000 to $40,000 in the first few years of business.
Skills and Duties of an Accountant
An accountant’s skills and duties are incredibly tedious. They must make sure that all statements follow the rules and regulations. They must also prepare tax returns and ensure payment to be done in a timely fashion. Accountants also have to look over and examine lots of statements to make sure they are all accurate. Accountants must be very organized to keep all the account books and accounting systems up to date they also organize financial records. The role of an accountant is also finding ways to reduce cost in the company and find ways to improve profits by enhancing revenues. Accountants provide auditing services for businesses and individual people as well. You need to enjoy your job because most of your days are sitting behind a desk looking at charts and numbers.
Skills and Duties of Owning a Dog Grooming Service
The skills of owning my dog grooming service require great customer service skills you are dealing with people all day so you must make sure you are good with them. You must be extremely patient and have good hand-eye coordination. When working with dogs, you need to have the ability to manage temperamental dogs and know the basic knowledge of canine health. My chosen major at LaGuardia is an accounting. I chose to account because I want to run my own business and as an accountant major I will be able to see what goes on with all the money and finances in my business. An accounting major will also give me skills and a degree I can fall back on if it is ever needed. A general business major is too broad for me to handle and thus, I need something more specific so that I can have more opportunities in the future. Maintaining a degree in accounting will also give me the opportunities to handle my books of accounts and taxes for my business. My planned date of graduation is in June of 2020, but I do plan on transferring to Baruch College and studying accounting as my major and business management as my minor. With this, therefore, I can be in a better position to learn how to succeed in the competitive business world. My academic goals are to maintain at least a 30 average throughout college and finish my bachelor’s degree in business accounting from Baruch College by latest 2022. I intend to use my professional years to become a successful accountant and move my way up in the field to increase my annual salary. Also, later I plan to open my mobile grooming service and then turn it into a storefront doggy hotel and day spa where dogs and dog owners can feel safe to come and stay while getting pampered at the same time.
