Effects of Fear in Education

Fear in Education

Fear is an unpleasant emotion that is brought about by anticipations of change, pain, or harm. Anxiety brings undesirable experiences and feelings at school. Moreover, enrolling in the higher institute of learning poses a significant threat to many students. Sometimes, pursuing a technical course can lead to psychological disorders, which further affects one's education. Majorly, fears in education endeavors are brought about by the high expectations in school performance from relatives and tutors. More so, several challenges are encountered in the universities because of numerous roles that are supposed to be accomplished in the course of study. Fear in school is caused by bullying, instability at home, punishments, and inability to manage diverse educational tasks.

Effect of Fear on Students

The first effect of fear is that it makes student's whole being develop bizarre class behavior. Sometimes learners fail to focus on the concepts that are taught due to their teachers' behavior. For instance, intolerable tutors trigger the minds of learners with insults turning their concentration to horrible things that are dissimilar from the content that is taught. This situation affects the learners psychologically and emotionally due to pre-occupation by terrifying ideas ("Holistic Education Initiative"). Therefore, this situation may affect learners' score in crucial areas that might be examinable.

Distress and Its Impact on Education

Furthermore, distress affects education through making students miss classes, a situation that also results in a dismal performance in specific units. Absconding of lessons occurs when the subject seems to be difficult for some learners. Also, fear results in low self-esteem as it lowers the morale of engaging actively in school activities. Becoming demotivated in a single unit leads to deterioration in the performance of other subjects ("Holistic Education Initiative"). Moreover, there is a likelihood of emergence of contempt towards those who underperform in particular units, which is a situation that further increases the level of fear in the affected students. For instance, the Journal of Experimental Psychology published in 2012 showed that learners who underperform have problems with making friends, a situation that further makes them deteriorate in their education. If these students do not receive enough guidance, they often end up deserting their studies. Additionally, the results that were published in the British Journal of Educational Psychology indicated that the learning motivation is lowered by anxiety in students ("Holistic Education Initiative"). A theoretical model below demonstrates students' fright and the apparent risks at school.

School Dropout and Fear

Moreover, fear leads to school dropout among some learners. Universities have recorded high wastage rates as learners quit schooling even after parents and guardians incurring massive costs to cater for their studies. When students are distressed due to their financial status, poor performance or lousy co-existence between them and other learners, leaving school becomes their only resolution ("Holistic Education Initiative"). Therefore, the education sector is affected since the enrolled number of students does not reflect at the end of the studies.

Fear and Poor Performance

Lastly, it is evident that fear is the primary cause of poor performance in many educational institutions. For instance, some students might fear participating in group projects, question and answer sessions with the teacher, or discussions, which is essential as it facilitates an exchange of ideas among them. If students miss engaging in such activities, then they would be risking their academic results. However, this pandemic among scholars and students can be eliminated by enlightening them on the adverse effects of nervousness. Overall, being aware of a learner's state of anxiety is also another way of curbing anxiety.
