Discrimination against International Students in Corvallis
Discrimination has been a frequent topic for a long time. People discriminate against others by their age, race, religion, sex, and other factors. As an international student, I have observed racial discrimination among students like myself, and this unfortunate occurrence is more obviously seen in encounters with the police. This essay focuses on the Corvallis police officers and how they discriminate against international students.
The Unfortunate Encounters with Corvallis Police
International students suffer a lot in the hands of Corvallis police in Oregon. They abuse the students, especially on the roads, forcefully giving them tickets for petty reasons like owning fancy cars. For us, the international students, leaving our home countries for a foreign one is never easy. Due to racial discrimination by the police, the international students admitted to the Oregon State University get arrested after being allegedly found with racist stickers in their cars outside Corvallis. Recently, the students have been complaining about discrimination against them.
The Influence of the Oregon Constitution
The Oregon constitution banned slavery and racial discrimination, but the ban excluded foreigners from legal residence in the State. The police have taken advantage of this to humiliate the international students who own cars. The students in the State feel alienated due to their nationality since the police always spare the natives but judge the foreigners for committing a crime on the roads. They even tend to exaggerate a small mistake. The issue not only affects the mentality of the students in the Oregon State University but also has an impact on the institution's reputation. What is more unfortunate is that these police officers merely follow the law, which was constructed but not in favor of international students. For instance, the government's law mandated that all the foreigners especially the blacks trying to reside in Oregon, be publicly whipped several times.
The Mistreatment by Corvallis Police
The Corvallis police do force the international university students to have the driving tickets for no reason. They use this chance to mistreat the students which in a way spoils the peaceful coexistence among the students in Oregon State University. The ill-treatment from the traffic police results in a lot of protests from the students in a bid to restore their freedom on roads. However, this is always a challenge since the international students are few in the State and the institution's administration usually neglects their complaints. The pulling over by the police as a result of racial bias is not an aberration in the State. Many have been victims of this act and not just the international students in the Oregon State University. For sure, if there would have been a chance to aggregate all the road cases and look at them, a lot of racial bias in the traffic system will be evident. The fact that the African Americans always get pulled over by the police on roads, especially in Corvallis, more than their whites counterparts, have long been the norm in the American life for the internationals. The police rudeness even went overboard when a police officer in Corvallis shot and killed a black student who was driving on the road following a routine stop for a broken tail light. The act happened just a day after another shooting by the police in Louisiana. Obama himself once asserted that the blacks in the country were disproportionately being pulled over.
Impact on Oregon State University
The police racism has a lot of negative impacts on the Oregon State University not only on the students themselves but also impact on the university's reputation. The harassment by the police on the roads makes our lives as international students at Oregon State University harder compared to the lives of the native students. The problem scares away potential international students from applying to the institution, hence reducing the market of the university. It is the Government's responsibility to come into play to alleviate the racial biases of the police on the Corvallis road to the international university students. Through the implementation of the policy, the students at Oregon State University will be living in peace and harmony, and a peaceful environment for the international students will enhance their studies in the states. Failure to this, chaos and even protests from the university students will arise since discrimination against international students is a real rot in the society.
