Bighorn Sheep Observation Report

The Bighorn Sheep

The bighorn sheep is one of the many species of wild sheep that is discovered in North American. It has a compact body which is muscular with chocolate brown fur that is trimmed in white on the muzzle, belly and rump. The male bighorn sheep has two giant curved horns, while the females have quick horns, which are slightly curved. While the bighorn sheep were flocking some of the rams have been using their horns to fight every other. Moreover, bighorn sheep have two wide-set eyes which are situated well in the front of on the head hence providing them with a two large curve of extraordinary vision. Their bodies were covered with thick hair. They had outer hooves that were shaped to holdup any slight protrusion and the soft inner pads provided a grip to various surfaces especially the steep areas.

Location

The bighorn sheep were found in western regions of North America. Those places were hilly and steep that aided in providing them with a hiding place away from predators. The place was relatively of about twenty five degrees Celsius.

Activities Performed During the 30 Minutes Interval

0318:00-0333:00

The big horn sheep engaged themselves in eating grass, plants and lichens in large proportions as they always have a complex four stomach parts. They feed in large flocks as they move from one place to another to look for plenty of grass.

0333:00-0348:00

The bighorn sheep also fed in flocks facing different directions which I realized that it was to protect themselves from predators. They moved from one place to another as they continued feeding on the grass. The rams were also fighting with each other especially with their horns.

Discussion

I believe the behavior I observed in the big horn sheep was essential .For instance; I was able to observe their activities as they were moving, feeding and when they were interacting among themselves in the given time although it was a short time.

Mollusca Specimen

Family: Octopididae

Genus: octopus

Species: O.bimaculoides

It is one of the octopuses that is found in many parts of the coast of California. The California two-spot octopus was easily identified by the round blue eyespots that were found on the both sides of its head. It had substantially elongated arms. The octopus was grey in color with some yellow spots. However, whenever it moved around the water and came across solid particles of different colors, the octopus changed its color for the purpose of adapting to the environment. The California two-spot octopus was feeding on the small animals that were already found in the water such as the crabs, snails, mussels, crayfish and clams.

Location

The water was favorably warm of about fifty degrees Celsius. In the aquarium, the octopus preferred to stay in the intertidal and underneath zones. The place was sandy with rocks but the California two-spot octopus spent most of the alone with no sign of escaping to hide in the rocks.

Activities Performed in 30 Minute Interval

0454:00-0524:00

The octopus moved around the water feeding on the small animals found in the water. Most of the time, it was alone and had no sign of hiding inside the rocks.

Discussion

I believe that the behavior observed in the California two-spot octopus was natural. However, I was able to observe it keenly in the aquarium without any interference. Moreover, the place was only limited to the habitat of the octopus hence it was its favorable environment.

Annelida Specimen

Family: Lumbricidae

Genus: Eisenia

Species: E.foetida

It is a species of an earthworm that lighter in color compared to the other types of worms. It is adapted to decomposing organic materials. In each of their segment, they possessed a group of bristles that aided them as they moved in and out. Consequently, it enabled them to grip closely to surfaces as they stretch and during contraction it enabled them to thrust themselves backward and forward. The red Californian earthworm exuded a pungent liquid when it was roughly handled. This was to prevent any predator from attacking the worm.

Location

The red Californian earth worm flourished in the rotting compost, manure and vegetation making. It was mostly found on top of the soil and some were found inside the soil so as to work on the soil. The soil was relatively warm of about thirty degrees Celsius.

Activities Performed in the 30 Minutes Interval

0422:00-0437:00

The earth worm moved in and out of the manure with the aid of the bristles.

0437:00-0452:00

It stretched itself backward and forward to grip itself closely to the surface.

Discussion

I believe the behavior of the red Californian earth worm was greatly natural as I was able to observe it clearly while it was in the animal manure. Moreover, I was able to observe it keenly and observe all the activities that took place within the given period.
