From the clip, the young boy Alvy is depressed on the realization that the universe is expanding and that one day it will fall apart. He fails to see the point of doing anything because the world is coming to an end anyway. The situation that the boy is going through is analogous to what a person who contemplates their death will be like. The realization that death is real and you are going to die makes a person define their existence differently.
When one thinks about the finality of death, it undoubtedly changes how they feel about life. First, one may decide to maximum their living and do as much as they can because they will not be around forever. For others, they choose to do more good for the generations that follow and leave behind a good legacy. Others result to do nothing at all with the mentality that in the end, it does not matter who did what, because once you are dead, no one will care. Whichever the choice an individual makes, it stems from one’s definition of living and existence.
Since one cannot escape death, it is necessary to live well and do well with others by bringing positive change in the society. If one’s desire is to help the needy and to see that more children get a quality education, then they will live their lives to accomplish this goal. The action is a vision that one works towards until it comes to pass, or until they die. A monument of such a figure will showcase that this was someone who valued the education of children and people would remember the person for that reason.
