A Validity Study of the UWIST Mood Adjective Checklist

Validity

Validity is universally appreciated as the most important and critical feature of any testing program. It entails everything that makes a test useful and meaningful.  There are three main types of validity tests which are content validity, criterion validity and construct validity.  Before carrying out a particular test, the validity of the information must be assured and guaranteed. There are factors that are usually considered when establishing the validity test. Similarly there are challenges encountered when establishing a validity test. One of the challenges is that finding and settling for a suitable criterion can be cumbersome, especially if the test-measures are new or not very well defined and listed for ease of research on the issues (Cheung and Cheung, 2003, p.7).

This is a challenge because if it is difficult to settle for a criterion, then the correlation coefficient will be attenuated and the value of the findings will be reduced in strength since it will be unreliable.  This puts doubt on the validity of the criterion used. Another challenge is that there is no requirement for the test to be a reasonable measure of the construct, but they should just relate strongly (Nunnaly and Bernstein, 1994, p. 13)

Mood

Mood is defined as an experience of emotions which lasts for several minutes. One of the advantages is that the psychometric results are usually satisfactory. Research has shown that the variable between the results were small in difference (Mathews, Jones, and Chamberlain, 1990, p. 17). The UWIST mood adjective checklist (UMACL). Another advantage is that it provides responses to the deficiencies or limitations in the already existing instruments such as demographics, personality traits among others.

Becks depression inventory is one of the most widely used tool for measuring the degree of depression. It is a 21 question multiple choice. Some of the advantages of using the tool are that the tool is a great tool for diagnosing depression. Secondly it is easy to use and understand for both the reader who is taking the test and even to the test administrator who is issuing the test.
