What is Right and What is Best in the Movie Collateral

Does doing the right thing, for instance becoming a witness as in the case of the movie Collateral outwit the choice of doing what is best for your safety based on the situations faced by the victims in the movie.

Body

In the movie Collateral, there are two levels of victims. The cab driver Max who is made to act as an accomplice to Vincent while under duress and the five persons who are in Vincent’s hit list(Mann, Collateral). After the first killing, Max learns of Vincent’s real profession but his efforts to save himself are futile, and Vincent threatens to kill Max’s mother if he does not comply. We notice Max is faced with the dilemma of either doing what is right by refusing to work with Vincent despite the risk of him and his mother getting murdered (Mann 65). The second option is Max doing what is best for himself which is acting as an accomplice and ensuring his safety and that of his mother(Mackie; Ebert). The second part is the victims on Vincent’s assassins list. They had the option of doing what is right which was to become witnesses in the federal case or doing what was best for them which was not testifying and avoiding the risk of getting killed.

Conclusion

The research paper is set to establish the relationship between what is right and what is best based on the movie Collateral. People are always faced with this dilemma, and we can see from the movie the real consequences of this decision. The paper has supported this argument by focusing on the Max and the assassin’s victims being faced with this situation and the choices they made and the implications it had on their lives.
