The Nature-Nurture Debate and its Impact on Intelligence
The nature-nurture debate is a common issue that is raised when judging about a person's intelligence. People always ask how nature and nurture differently influence a person's IQ. It is evident that both nature and nurture impact human being's intellectual growth. It is clear to that the environment that a person is brought up in from childhood influences one's thinking. Also, psychologically, through parental behavior, it becomes possible for a child to learn and adopt the same conduct because children learn from what they see and what they hear from those people around them since childhood.
Physical Environmental Factors and Intellectual Development
The physical environmental factors likely to impact a person's intellectual development comprise of; the location where children are brought up in, for instance, people growing up in a rural area and others from an urban area. The two physical environments would influence children differently. Those children raised in the urban-based environment will have higher exposure to things and tend to develop higher IQ as compared to those children who are brought up in remote areas whose exposure is limited. Also, children brought up in the same environment have the same level of intelligence. In rural areas, children have fewer things to interact with, and they are always exposed to the same climate, therefore lack of the ability to improve intellectually. Therefore, children from urban areas are more competitive that children from remote areas because their intelligence is enhanced by the opportunity to interact with different people and surroundings.
The Importance of a Clean Environment to Intellectual Development
Access and exposure to a clean environment with clean water for drinking and proper sanitation is another physical environmental factor influencing a child's development. Once a child is brought up with access to the good healthy environment, they tend to grow with high IQ as compared to those children who are brought up in the situations where they limited clean water and proper sanitation. Such environments affect the growth of a child negatively. Children might be affected intellectually because of being exposed to inadequate sanitation and places that lack access to clean water. Such children suffer from infectious disease, which might also impact their intellectual growth because of having poor general health. Indeed, the neighborhood quality influences a child's development of IQ because those children in full and dirty locations have poor performance even in school. Being in crowded places means that the child has less responsive to the environment because of confusion and lack of space to learn based on the distractions caused in the full area where sanitation is also poor.
The Influence of Play Materials and Exposure to Diverse Games
The physical environment with different play materials and where a child is exposed to diverse games enhance their growth. Once a child is brought up in a location where there are things to attract their attention, such as playing material, the child tends to grow with high IQ. Learning and language development of a child is enhanced by one's exposure to different elements from childhood. For instance, a when a child is provided various kinds of toys and play tools when very young, that child is likely to develop high IQ faster compared to another child of the same age and who were not exposed to play materials. Indeed, a child with exposure can react and think very fast as exposure have high responsive to young children. A child's concentration improves because of being kept busy with tools to play with, therefore being motivated to develop improved interpersonal behavior.
Differences between Middle Class and Low Class Children
The above factors differ for children in middle class and those in low class because of exposure; whereby those in middle class have higher exposure to different materials and environments that enhance their intelligence compared to the poor.
