The Importance of Proxemics in Communication
The way we interact with our physical space helps us communicate a lot concerning other people. Proxemics helps us to gauge if somebody is mean, friendly, and insane or possibly welcoming (Low 10). It shows the immediacy of communication with the concerned party, aiding individuals to express the willingness and desire of communicating with others as well as enhancing friendliness and openness in communication (Low 18). On the other hand, the utilization of the physical space gives a signal that indicates whether one is interested in a conversation or not. By expressing immediacy, it shows that the two parties are ready to communicate in openness (Low 16). Similarly, proxemics depicts a sign of territoriality, which is a nonverbal communication of ownership. If one feels protective of a particular item or space, the body language will reflect the behavior.
Application of Proxemics in Dealing with Nonverbal Violation
Regarding the videos, I would employ similar tactics in dealing with the situations. Since the victims of nonverbal violation were studying quietly in the library, I would react to such a scenario by backing off, reason being, engaging the distractors will escalate the issue out of proportion and deny me the space to study. For instance, the way the distractors were moving close, I would have walked away and sought another silent place. Similarly, I would negotiate with the distractors in an attempt to find a possible way of accommodating them. For instance, in the second scenario, where girls are conversing, I would negotiate with the distractors to kindly look for another place and explain to them the importance of the talk. By soberly negotiating with them in a sober manner, we will reach a mutually beneficial consent and proceed peacefully.
