The Impact of Cell Phones on Communication

All it takes two-minute scrutiny at the surrounding, and it strikes any sound person that the mobile phone is dominating every aspect of people’s conversations. Heralded as the ‘newest drug,’ it is evident that cell phones have proved pivotal in enhancing communication while also, to significant levels, promoting its death. In the advent of technology, people depended on one on one interactions as a way of communicating. The essay will analyze how cell phones have changed the communication sphere for humanity.

Communication has been made convenient as a result of the cellphone. Today people need only one device and hence do not have the urgency wait long to communicate something. A person who is driving to Los Angeles can use his/her smartphone to communicate with their employees or colleagues through email or a call. Additionally, people can receive information faster and efficiently since it only takes dialing and a few conversations to convey a message (Nickson).  Text messages have become the new agent of communication between people who are cities or just miles apart from each other. Text messages just like calls are therefore faster, efficient and convenient compared to one on one interaction in today’s society.

Communication is now an open process for teenagers who can communicate with their friends, parents, and teachers. It has enabled groups to acquire information from others in a more comfortable and channeled way instead of having to meet up. Children can text their parents and so can parents to teachers. It is an open communication that is instant and that which fosters an immediacy of response depending on the situation. While also boosting communication between parents, cell phones continue to isolate teenagers from other members of the society (Clark 3).  Teenagers prefer to stay glued on their phones while with friends or even gatherings and this is hindering communication for the young generation holistically. With smartphones, online groups have been created making a connection to larger audience possible. For example, a person in New York can get information about California through group discussions that disseminate information to members efficiently.

Lastly, nearly ten years ago, humanity received its first ever iPhone which changed the human interaction process. Communication which was once an organic process undertaken in a personal manner shifted the way people build and define and relationships. A wrongly used exclamation mark or a picture taken with an unexpected person may lead to havoc if uploaded to Instagram. Cellphones have created a new type of conversations which is bolstering a structural change in how people communicate (The Internet, Cell Phones, and Family Communication 1). Every picture taken or word spelled has a different meaning in the smartphone world and when misused may engender a communication mishap. With smartphones presenting social platforms such as Facebook there is a visual and tangible index of friendship which indicates which features show that one is a friend or enemy.

Conclusion

For culturally diverse people, an efficient and reliable form of communication is indispensable. The age of technology has brought forth cellphones which have led to a convenient and fast way of communication. Consequently, the once personal form of communication has been depersonalized leading to people who are socially isolated to have one on one conversations with each other.
