The Business Processes in Watchung Hills Regional School

Organizational goals are often attained after the completion of sets of coordinated activities and tasks. The tasks are often referred to as the business processes. Each organization must have organizational processes that they follow so that they work closer towards the attainment of their goals, and objectives (Heerdink, 2012). Additionally, the business processes are expected to change with the growth, and evolution of the business organization (Belton, 2017). Some of the processes include planning, training, production, sales, and marketing. Hence, advanced studies ought to be conducted on the methods for the success of the organization.

Watchung Hills Regional High School is the target organization that forms the baseline of this study and analysis. It is a regional public high school serving portions of students from two counties in New Jersey in the USA. Existing literature and reports indicate that in 2016, the school ranked 37 out of 342 schools in New Jersey. Some of the processes undertaken in the school that will be mapped using relationship and cross-functional maps include staff recruitment, teaching, and student admission. The student admissions teaching standards will be measured so that the current level of the student admissions are analysed, and recommendations outlined to assist in the creation of better experience and progress of the school.

The analysis process will be organized in such a way that all factors which interrelate to influence the student admission and teaching processes in the school are reacted to. Again, there are also challenges and advantages that come along with the methods of admission and teaching. All these issues will be addressed in this study.

Moreover, the admission recommendations will also be aimed at suggesting possible ways of improving the admission and teaching processes. It is through the development of a board of trustees who will evaluate the teaching staff by their teaching skills and professionalism, students’ understanding, and relations to the teaching staff. Again, the admission must include the establishment of a systematic online student admission strategy. Teaching manuals will also be analysed and examined to establish strategy and methods incorporated the in teaching by teachers and evaluating why they comply with set federal standards.

1. The Organization

Watchung Hills Regional High School is the organization chosen for this report. It is located in New Jerky, and it serves over two thousand students from the nearby counties and townships. The school’s student to teacher’s ration is 12.5:1. Besides, the school also receives students from all races though the whites are the dominating Indians than the Latinos while the rest of the minority groups chip in later. The reason for choosing this organization is that it once had issues with standardization/ academic discipline. In the previous years, cases of cheating have been mentioned against the school. However, the entire organization has taken the issue on lighter notes. It even undermined the delivery of disciplinary measures by giving one directly involved individual a mere ten-day suspension. Similarly, such cases may make people believe that the school is developing of less integrity and self-discipline.

1.1 Mission Statement

The school is committed towards the development of creative and critical thinkers who will collaborate and communicate effectively to solve academic and many life problems. It, therefore, means that the students will be in the full capacity to be self-guided especially in making life decisions.

1.2 Target

Watchung Hills Regional High School serves a large target group from its surrounding population. Some of the locals’ contributing to this population of demographics include Somerset County and Morris County. As stated earlier, the school receives a large audience of over 2000 students, and this population is shared across the ethnic groups and the surrounding counties and townships.

1.3 Strategy

The school focuses on a given action plan for the period 2015-2020 that will encourage them to achieve its objectives.

i. Creation and development of programs and services that enhanced the emotional and social welfare of all students within the community (goal one); Enhancing freedom for the development of critical reasoning and creative problem-solving skills.

ii. Building and strengthening structure which enables the students to enhance their full potential and experiences in the learning institution in addition to empowering and preparing the students for post-secondary education/ life (goal two); the students and their parents are encouraged to pay attention to their experiences and too approach all their duties and responsibilities with honesty and dedication (Grant, 2016).

iii. To integrate innovative, interdisciplinary, and creative learning throughout the district to encourage and empower the students for success in the global community (goal three); Encouraging the culture of acceptance and collaboration.

2. Business Process Identification

As stated earlier, processes are the activities which facilitate the functioning of an organization. Therefore, the business process is the backbone of any organization (Grant, 2016). Thus, the growth of an organization rests on the same. Hence, it is essential to identify and conduct an analysis of any business’ process identification.

2.1 Student Admission

Students are annually admitted into the school from the nearby townships and counties. Admission for students in most of the district’s schools requires the students to have medical exams, screening of visions amongst other medical tests. An appointment is also needed for new registrants into the school. The average student enrollment at the regional schools is 2175. Statistics indicate that approximately 95 % of the students in the 2018 class are attending post-secondary institutions. Students also need a copy of the recent medical, physical examination. For new registrants, some of the requirements include a form from Watchung Hills Regional High School, recent report cards, and nonofficial school transcript. The requirement aid in the better understanding of the students by the administration (Fleisher, 2015)

2.2 Teaching

Some of the lessons offered in the school include arts, business, English, science, social studies, word language, physical education/health, mathematics, and special services. They are intended to ensure that the students get well equipped with the best life skills they may desire. The teachers are also dedicated to the provision of meaningful educational experience that creates optimal opportunities for students’ success in school during the study period. Teaching is facilitated by being abreast of current research, improving continuity upon classroom instructions and sharing best practices. This facilitate stiff competition with other academic institutions (Belton, 2017). Again, there is collaboration and cooperation between the teachers, staff, and the administrators. The school committee is also dedicated towards the academic achievement and social /emotional well-being. The existing collaboration and interaction of the staff members in teaching confirms the existence of a cross-functional and cross-relationship process in teaching (Ali, 2016).

2.3 Staff Recruitment

All process essential for the functioning of the organization are dependent on the labor resource. The method of recruitment is therefore very crucial since it serves to boost the organization's processes (Fleisher, 2015). The regional schools have an organized system for recruiting new staff. They advertise the existing vacancies through various media platforms like the websites.

3. Relationships and Cross-Functional Maps

3.1 Relationship Maps

Figure 1: Student admission relationship maps

4. Analysis

The relationship maps provide good guidelines of how the various practices function to deliver services. Different departmental teams work independently to create a joint effort which results in the overall success of the organization. Students are presented at the administration where they are assessed by the teaching staff through an organized panel or committee. The disconnect may occur when there is no proper coordination of the departmental teams in the drive to create a good working system.

The disconnect that occurs in the organization which results in the misconduct may be due to limited or unsupervised coordination between the student and the administration after admission. Similarly, in the recruitment, there is a disconnection in the recruitment process which results in the hiring of individuals with limited principles and standards.

5. Discussion

The relationship maps shows an appropriate system adopted by the school in the recruitment of students. From the map it is evident that the students are taken through the appropriate departments to help them adjust to the new school. The students are able to interact with all the departments in the school during their recruitment. However, the school does not offer more interaction between the students and the administration as shown by the relationship map. Improved and more interaction between the students and the administrations is required to ensure the adaptability of the students in the new school. Additionally, the relationship map shows that there is no interaction between the administration and the hotel service team. The hotel service team interacts with the students more than the administration. This presents a gap, since the administration is not aware of the type of interaction between the hotel service team and the students. The interaction between the administration and the hotel service team also facilitates easier understanding of the students by the administration with regards to the diet offered in school. The administration acknowledged the need of proper diet for students, thus must implement strategies of improving interactions with the hotel service team.

6. Conclusion

Watchung Hills Regional High School has been able to adopt a systematic process that ensure an easy transition of students in the institution. The interaction of the students from the administration to the subordinate staff is crucial. This is because during the learning period, the students have to interact with the administration, teachers, subordinate staff and the hotel service team. The collective team facilitate an easy transition for the students from their homes to a new school. Notably, the students need to interact with the administration even after their recruitment. This results a gap in the business process in the school. The interaction of the administration and the students will facilitate better business progress. This is however, lacking in Watchung Hills Regional High School where, the interaction of the students with the management is only evident during the recruitment process. There is lack of interaction between the hotel service team and the administration. The hotel service team is essential since it interacts with the students. To ensure effectiveness in the Watchung Hills Regional High School business process the administration needs to employ better strategies in implementing its interaction with the hotel service team.

7. Recommendations

Improvement of the interaction between the administration and the students. Better and improved interaction between the administration and the students would ensure that the administration is able to assess the progress of the students and the school at large. Additionally, better interactions between the administration and the students would provide confidence to the students in assuring them that the school cares about their wellbeing. Moreover, there should exists interaction between the hotel service team and the administration. The reason is that the hotel service team interact with the students more than the administration in Watchung Hills Regional High School. As such, improved interaction between the hotel service team and the administration would facilitate better understanding of the students by the administration.
