Stroke of Insight

The MESSAGE

The MESSAGE presented is about Jill's experiences during a stroke. The message illustrates how her part of the brain was switched off. Therefore, the RECEIVER is the audience listening to understand the key message being explained by Jill. The CHANNEL used to convey the information is face to face interaction with the audience (Cowell 1). The receiver then CODE the information, takes some symbol and interlink them into their thought for better understanding. On the other hand, the type of model as it applies to the Stroke of Insight speech involves an interaction model in which there is communication feedback from the audience. Also, a person replies to the blog replies as well as email and also respond to the conversation being presented and the best way they can respond (Cowell 2).

2. Critical Listening

The main idea the speaker presents is about what makes her brain to be different from her brother who is suffering from schizophrenia. She explains by bringing the real human brain on the stage, explaining it is divided into two different halves. She further describes how left brain functions in the body and how it can result in malfunction. One of the preconceived ideas about the speech is that mental health can also result in more health issues if action is not taken as required (Critical listening). From the speaker's explanation, at the time she contracted stroke, she was disconnected from the normal brain chatter. This illustration is factual since brain problem can result in emotional baggage as a result interfered with one's way of thinking. For example, when she was trying to read the business card and her vision separated into section making it difficult for her to differentiate it from the background.

3. Barriers to Communication and Listening

There are three categories of noise that can act as a barrier to communication and listening. Firstly, is semantic noise, this involves an understanding of a given the word when the actual meaning of that word does not sufficiently match what the real sender intended to portray. Secondly, is external noise, it involves what an individual think about when they hear the word noise in everyday conversation (Cowell 3). In other words, it is anything which makes it more difficult for a person to listen to what the other person is saying. For instance, loud noise from outside can hinder communication and as a result, interfere with one's understanding of a given scenario. Lastly is internal noise, it entails all that is happening within a person and might destruct their thinking or understanding of the message being portrayed (Cowell 4).

One of the categories of noise that influenced my ability to listen to the conversation in the "Stroke of insight" presentation is semantic noise (Noise example 1). In this way, understanding and elaborates on the point when Jill explains how the stroke disabled her left side of the brain (Jill 3). Understanding in this scenario, is that stroke is an action and possibly was able to disable her left brain. And the truth is that stroke influenced or caused her left brain to malfunction as required. Another category of destruction is internal noise (Noise example 2). For example, when using a human brain to demonstrate how one brain can be affected by the stroke (Jill 3).
