The society enjoys the benefits of RFID technology today. Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology offers the capability to automatically read the data on tags attached to cases, pallets, different items or containers. The use of RFID enhances the visibility of the supply chain of any organization. This technology enables to identify any product available within the organization and any product can be tracked through the supply chain system (Bonsor).
Each company can benefit by using RFID. It can be used to improve security system of the company by monitoring criminal activities or behaviors of suspects. The employees can get a card to access the main building entrance (or even each room or at least particular regions), so each movement will be tracked. It will be very easy to monitor a movement of any goods at all the production stages as well. RFID also provides a great value for the retail business. First of all, it allows to effectively manage the inventory by tracking an item in the supply chain. The visibility of supply chain is increased by the collected data. Real-time data increases management responsiveness and enables to make accurate orders for products by forecasting on items to replenish.
There are some risks in using RFID. This technology requires high investment cost and replacement. It is important to develop a strategic investment plan to minimize costs. Another weak side is virus attacks which might affect the data storage and the organization should get antivirus software to safeguard against them.
