Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a networking technique that allows network cables to transport power. The constant improvement of computers has enabled this technique. Throughout the years, mobility has become a major issue in the design of computers, and as a result, classic desktop computers have given way to tiny PCs, laptops, and other portable devices. As a result, some networking devices were developed tiny enough to send both the essential electricity for lighting a device and data transfer to the same device. This method is commonly utilized in access points, cameras, phones, and desktop Voice over IP (VoIP). For the provision of both power and data to a device through the use of Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, all that is required for installation of a networked PoE device is a single low-voltage Ethernet cable. The Ethernet cables comprise of four pairs of wires whereby with 100 and 10 Mbps Ethernet, two pairs are utilized in the transmission of and receiving of data whereas the other two wires remain unutilized (Coleman, & Westcott, 2014). However, in Gigabit Ethernet, all four pairs of wires are used in retrieval and transmission of data. The Power over Ethernet (PoE) infrastructure is made of several devices. They include powered devices (PD) and power-sourcing equipment (PSE). The powered devices are responsible for either drawing or requesting power from power sourcing equipment. As such, this equipment ought to have the capacity to accept up to 57 volts from either the unused pairs of Ethernet cable or the data lines. They are also supposed to accept power with polarity from the power supply in either mode A or mode B as well as reply to the power-sourcing equipment. They reply with a detection signature and also alerts the power-sourcing equipment regarding its state of whether it can or cannot accept power.

The Power-sourcing Equipment

The power-sourcing equipment is used in the provision of power to the powered devices. This equipment is classified into two types, midspan and end-point. The endpoint power sourcing equipment is utilized in the provision of Ethernet data signals and power from the same device. On the other hand, a midspan power source equipment enables one to provide Power over Ethernet to existing networks without the replacement of the existing Ethernet switches. Moreover, a medium dependent interface is required to transmit the current to a powered device.

The tool is also capable of providing a means for exploration and maneuvering through a certain network and can allow the user to utilize compromised hosts as a platform for attacking other hosts. Therefore, due to its various capabilities, Armitage can be used in the evaluation of vulnerability assessments within a system and in securing vulnerable machines.
