Medical social work is a sub-discipline of social work specializing in inpatient medical and public health. For an entry-level position as a medical social worker, one requires a bachelor degree in social work. Additionally, there are other positions that require an individual to hold a master’s degree in social work. This should come from a program that has been accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
The reason why I chose to be a medical social worker
The field deals with helping patients as well as their families to cope with the various social and emotional responses regarding treatment and illness. This platform therefore gives me an avenue for educating patients on issues regarding how to cope with these situations as well as educating them on the various health insurance coverage that they can take on.
For my academic growth
I plan to seek out resources from the library which will help me acquire essential knowledge regarding the field as well as have much insight as to what is expected of me. Additionally, I plan on engaging lecturers and professors who have a vast knowledge of what medical social work entails. These individuals will help me in my growth as well as offer me additional tuition so that I can succeed.
For my professional growth
I will engage those that have matured in medical social work and have been in the field for a while. Essentially, these individuals have the much-needed experience and thus can be able to teach me what to expect as well as how to react to the various scenarios that present themselves in one way or another.
