Actors in a Knowledge Management System
Actors, who comprise of people are one of the components of a knowledge management system. To understand their involvement in the system, I approached my local hospital manager, who informed that the central point of a KM system is people. In a knowledge management system, the participants often present with divergent experiences and backgrounds. These participants often deploy, create or use knowledge management software. For KM system to be effective, several roles are involved and these include sources, enablers, owners, targets, champions and communities, and boundary spanners.
Strategies for Improving the KM System
b) There are several steps or strategies that could be adopted in order for actors to improve the KM system. One way to do this making the KMS easy for people to navigate, this will encourage sharing of information and knowledge in the organization. A content creation framework should also be implemented while a significant investment in analytics should be established.
Involvement of Employees in KM System
c) Besides the manager who is solely responsible in the management of a KM system, other employees who can be integrated in the assessment and improvement of the KM system are junior level employees such as technical staff, researcher and development employees, human resources, financiers, and planners.
Benefits of a Well-Managed KM System
d) A KM system when well adopted and accepted in an organization leads to better performance of an organization. Thus, the system must be deliberately managed and developed to enhance and support knowledge-intensive tasks, processes or projects. Thus, improvement can be enabled by making sure techniques, tools and strategies are all tailored to mirror particular business requirements. Also, a distinctive line between knowledge and information should be established to ensure that KM system is well managed and run.
