Job satisfaction can simply be defined as a feeling of contentment and accomplishment that an individual springs from his/her place of work. There are various facets that can make an individual be contented or not in the workplace and this greatly determines their performance, which is a great contributor to the organization’s success or failure. Low job satisfaction causes workers much suffering and this paper strives to examine the reasons for job dissatisfaction.
Low job satisfaction can be caused by a number of reasons including; underpayment, lack of interest, poor management, limited career growth and advancement and lack of appreciation. Underpayment is whereby, staff are not given enough wages with regard to their nature of work, which makes it hard for them to pay bills including the high cost of insurance (Johnson). Disinterest in one’s occupation is mostly caused by monotony in duties given; thus, with time, the work gets boring. Most employees derive thrill in challenges and without it, the zeal to become productive fades. Bosses who have poor management skills and provide little or no response to workers’ performance are considered poor managers. Some supervisors command workers instead of inspiring them, thus bringing about little output.
Partial development in the occupation comes about when employees feel fixed in their positions. Lack of promotions lead to this and in turn, affects their productivity negatively. Managers who contain their labor force in long-term strategies of the business, and pay them well, receive more commitment than those who do not. Lack of appreciation is also another factor that leads to dissatisfaction of employees. Managers who do not esteem their workers discourage them, but those who expression gratitude lift the employees’ confidence to give improved yields (Oscar).
Overall, employee satisfaction in the workplace is key if the organization is to succeed, thus managers have a fundamental role in ensuring their workforce is motivated enough to achieve this goal.
