“I want a wife”

The paper includes a review of Judy Brandy's book "I want a wife." The author of one of the texts in the book makes a convincing case that males in the 1970s saw women as objects of lust and servitude in that text. It is evident from the proof she provides in the book that women suffer at the hands of men who only wanted their service. The wives in the novel are portrayed as being less than human beings who must struggle to appease their husbands, and on many occasions, they end up being treated more like tools than like other people. The author has reversed her role as a husband, and she has been able to portray the many expectations husbands have over their wives. Through the sarcastic and cynical tone, the author has been able to communicate the message that, women should be treated with respect and taken as equal human as men.

The author's credibility and appeal to the reader

The author has proved to be a credible source of the concepts put across in text and the book at large. She personally underwent a series of marriages and she suffered lots of torture in her respective marriages. After observing the suffering of her fellow women, she decided to speak up through writing so as to put the matter of oppressing women in the name of love into a perspective (Brandy, 2014). The language the author has used is appropriate for the audience as it evokes feelings over the subject matter and prompts the reader to take action and put to a halt suffering women go through. Even though to the extreme the author seems biased on men, most of the issues brought forward in the text are the real situations in life. Men expect women to give up everything for their sake and pleasure. Additionally, the author has used pathos to invoke sympathy from the reader (Leung, 2015). The kind of oppression women face in their marriages prompts the audience to empathize with the ladies of the time and wish that something ought to have been done to curb the situation. Also, she has successfully drawn pity for the women and inspired anger among the audience to realize adverse impacts of women oppression in marriages. Given her personal life experiences, the author has been able to make a logical appeal to the reader to understand the matter and hand together with its consequences.

The author's use of exposition and tone

Remarkably, the author has used exposition as the standard mode of writing in the text. She has explained the topic of why she wants a wife and the expectation she has for the woman. She has also been able to describe the atrocities women face in marriage and the various issues that men demand to be addressed by women in the society. The man expects to get a wife who is willing to give up on her career for his sake and remain a housewife to take care of the family. Notably, the author has used powerful words to express her concept to the audience and thus her message to the reader is simple, clear and convincing. Consequently, the reader is attentive and he is kept engaged interested to read the text (Griffith, 2014). So as to reinforce the purpose of the book and speak to the audience, the author used a cynical and sarcastic tone. Therefore, the audience is convinced that harassing women is not an ethical issue and they should be treated with respect and taken as equal human beings like men. Clearly, women can be a lot more than expected in the years of 1970's.
