How to Develop Good Study Habits

As a refresher to this week’s readings, consider learning more about making a commitment to learn and apply positive habits by completing this week’s recommended Connect Activities.


Tip: When writing your e-mail, review the sections in Chapter 7 titled, “Writing Effective E-Mail Messages” and “Netiquette: Showing Civility on the Web.”  This means, you probably want to include a greeting and let the person know who you are early in the email.

I am Christopher, working at the university’s student resource center, and by this email, I seek to provide advice to you regarding positive study habits. Particularly, I address note taking strategies, importance of developing good study habits, and how to effectively acquire credible information on the web.


When taking notes, pick up the main points rather than trying to translate every single word said in the lecture. This strategy enables you remember important information. Developing your own language of abbreviations and symbols is also a key note-taking strategy that enables you write, more with little effort. Additionally, underlining the most important concepts during note taking is an important strategy as it helps in memorization of the concepts.


The most effective tip for sorting through vast quantity of information on the internet is to use search engines such as Google, Google Scholar, and Yahoo. After selecting your search engine, enter search terms or keyword in the query box, and then if necessary, limit the search, then view the list of relevance ranked findings or results. To assess your research sources for credibility and reliability, you will consciously and deliberately use critical thinking skills by considering the authors’ qualifications, the intended audience or purpose, the reputation of the publication, how current the source is, any indications of hidden agendas or bias, and the general quality of writing, design, and thinking


Developing good study habits such as using your own words when making notes helps in avoiding the danger of repeating phrases from the sources used, thereby helping avoid plagiarism in future studies. Keeping a careful record of the sources used and acknowledging the sources by using in-text citations and a list of references helps in avoiding plagiarism in future studies.
