Healthcare and Medicine Essay

Adopting the proper health promotion theory and model of action is the first step in encouraging, educating, or assisting individuals to live healthier lives and build healthy communities. The establishment of institutions that ensure sustainable healthcare administration should be guided by the model. The environmental, social, and economic factors that influence community health should be the main focus. (Glanz, Rimer, Viswanath and Orleans 48). The model will direct the plans and tactics to ensure the target audience is positively affected to the fullest extent possible. Accurate population needs assessments and the development of intervention capability are necessary for this strategy. An important factor to consider is the capacity of the impact of the selected model on the population and the element of sustainability. Given the projected increase in the cost of healthcare, the model to be adopted should promote the element of affordability and allow for the prioritization of the different aspects of healthcare in accordance with the identified needs. Moreover, the population should be empowered with resourceful information on public health with the view of transforming their attitudes on matters that appertain to their health. The appropriate model should be sufficiently elaborate to cover all the aspects of healthcare.

Some of the current health education models used by educators to promote health include Stages of Change Model, a Precaution Adoption Process Model, and the Social Ecological Models. According to the Stages of Change Model, an individual’s intention or willingness to change behavior tends to vary among and within individuals over some time (Sharma 56). This model is usually applied in the description of the motivation behind an individual who intends to change a health-related behavior. This model outlined the five steps that determine change. The first three steps are pre-contemplation, contemplation, and preparation. The last two stages are action and maintenance.

The Precaution Adoption Model focuses on the value of providing information to people regarding health hazards and engaging them in the necessary behavioral change processes (Sharma 42). This model also acknowledges the fact that the process of change also takes place in stages. The stages begin from the moment when the person is unaware of the health hazard up to the point when the individual has finally decided to change his habits or behaviors in a manner that promotes health. The Social Ecological Models are related to Systems Theory. This model focuses on the various environmental-focused and person-focused interventions that are meant to change behavior.

Part III

My favored approach of improving the lives of the community shall incline towards the Precaution Adoption Model. This model is necessary because of its educative nature. One of the outstanding merits of the model is that it provides for the dissemination of important information with regard to the various hazards that the community faces. Previous surveys have shown that people suffer from common diseases because they lack sufficient information regarding the nature of such diseases. As such, it will be necessary to empower the community with the necessary information that they need in order to make the right choices about their lives.

The value of this approach also lies in the fact that it entails various stages that begin from the awareness of the condition to the moment of action (Miller and Pamella 19). The element of empowerment is necessary for promoting community health. Besides, many emerging hazards in the world are still unknown to the general public. The purpose of disseminating information shall be based on the need to raise the awareness of the community on such dangers and guide the people on the need to adopt healthy living practices. The overall goal shall be the promotion of the health through education and action.
