Because God made humans in His image, men and women should be treated equally. However, society created social gender roles that differentiated each individual's role in the community. Historically, women were subject to laws made by their husbands, therefore they referred to their husbands as lords. Men were the heads of households, while women were their subjects, and the culture clearly defined each person's function. By doing so, socially imposed gender roles favored men over women, denying women independence and rights. Even after colonial independence, slaves and most women were denied full rights during the colonization era. Women were viewed as lesser beings with no authority and freedom. During the civilization and emergence of Christianity era, women were too regarded as subjects to men. According to Mill (676), Paul says wives ought to obey their husbands. Therefore, it is evident that the society have already defined various roles for different sexes thus enhancing deprivation of women liberty. In the modern society, denial of women rights and freedom has been a significant challenge facing the women in the community. Women have little or no power to lead in political issues as well as their political rights are less as compared to those of men. There is no equality of both genders in matters pertaining education and job opportunities. Different philosophers as well as scholars have identified the problem and provided various solutions to ensure justice for all human beings. According to Philosopher Mill, providing equality of opportunity as well as the public sphere of political rights is sufficient in ensuring women's freedom. However, the solution is not significantly enough thus his idea has been refuted by many contemporary feminist who provide a better solution to enhance equality. According to the modern feminists, a change in socially constructed gender roles for both men and women can create freedom to women. Therefore, the contemporary feminists are right in identifying the problem and providing a solution in attaining women liberty thus it is necessary to address socialization process hence change the perception of both men and women in the society.

Besides, many contemporary feminists have argued that unless socially constructed gender roles for both men and women are changed, then women can never make free choices or be free in their lives. In fact, the feminists are right in identifying the problem as well as in providing the solution. Historically, the struggle between authority and liberty is the most conspicuous feature among the females. Women had a legal right to submit to their men thus hindering human improvement. According to Mill (654), women are entirely under men's rule with no share in public concerns thus hindering women liberty and rights. During the colonization era, women were regarded as minor beings with no authority and rights of expression. It is evident that even after the declaration of independence, the constructed roles of women remained thus depriving them their freedom. According to Mill (659), during the ancient era, women were brought up in the belief that their character idealism is different from that of men. Therefore, it was their duty to willing-fully and voluntarily submit to the other gender thus make a complete negation of themselves. Indeed, it is well said that the rule of males over the females is accepted voluntarily and women do not complain rather they consent to it (Mill 658). Similarly, during the ancient times, women were sold for marriage or taken by force. Therefore, the modern feminists have identified that the ancient gender roles have significantly increased the prevalence of gender inequality and denial of freedom and liberty. In providing a solution to the problem, it is necessary to address the private sphere, critique the socialization process as well as seek to change how women and men view themselves. The society ought to change the ancient and old-fashioned roles of different genders and instill change in defining equality of both genders. By so doing, women would participate fully in all the societies’ activities. Their confidence would be realized, recognized and achieved. Also, they would feel free and make free choices thus enhancing equality, liberty, and freedom to all human beings.

Remarkably, it is not enough to allow freedom to follow through ensuring that women are given political rights as well as equality of opportunity. According to Mill perspective, providing a public sphere of justice and political privileges is sufficient to enhance women privileges. However, this argument can only be applied in the ancient days where women were not viable for any political and governmental seats. According to Mill (653), women must obey men and thus have no right to vie for legislative seats since they are unfit. On the same note, ancient society gave a lot of privilege to men since the claim of education admission into occupations and professionals hitherto closed to women. By so doing, differences between the two genders widened thus creating inequality. However, Mill argument just identifies the source of variation and denial of freedom to females as based on political and other issues in the society. However, the solution he provides is not sufficient enough to enhance equality in the modern society. For instance, ensuring fairness in matters pertaining education and opportunities is not enough to ensure equality since already the community has well-defined responsibilities of both men and women. Similarly, providing political rights to the women is still not enough to address the issue since the society is still tied up by the social established culture. Despite that civilization and Christianity have restored justice to women, the actualization of women liberty and equality has been a challenge in the modern society (Mill 667). Henceforth, it is necessary first to address the socially set gender roles, ensure change thus enhance freedom for women.

Conclusion

In conclusion, women's freedom can only be ensured by changing the socially constructed gender roles for men and women. According to many contemporary feminists, the society has already its defined culture and customs that define men to be superior while the females are minor. The evidence is supported by the fact that women should submit to the men voluntarily. The roles and responsibilities of the two genders reveal a wide gap in equality and freedom accorded. According to Mill (658), all minorities (women) ought to voluntarily obey and submit to the men without much complains. In fact, social liberty, especially to the women, has historically remained a significant challenge across the world. The modern philosophers argue that freedom to women can only be achieved by changing the made norms concerning roles of the genders thus ensure equality, liberty as well as the freedom to women. By so doing, political rights, as well as equal opportunities, would also be achieved.
