Eclecticism in Architecture
Eclecticism is a style of architecture that combines aspects of gothic architecture with contemporary features to produce an authentic design. Zekrgoo (2017) claims that eclecticism is used to create designs while simultaneously preserving historical advancements in building. The builder can be more creative and expressive with this style of design. To create a distinctive look for the Sagrada Familia church, the architect combined natural and gothic components with contemporary design.
Inspiration from Nature
In order to draw inspiration from nature, the builder used columns that resemble tree buttresses. Additionally, the architecture has an outdated feel due to the use of buttresses. The columns have a design identical to the trunk of trees and have been stretched to form an intricate design of a web. This is an attempt to create an impression of nature's impact in the modern world.
Mimicking Light and Support
Similarly, the church has an arrangement of mirrors that mimic light shining down on trees in a forest. Furthermore, the church has used piers that have tree-like features. This design inspired by nature creates solid support to sustain upward pressure. The columns also have fluting, which divides to imitate branches of trees. This design creates a sturdy frame all-round the church.
Symbolism and Contemporary Design
Another important feature noted in the church design is the use of locking columns. These columns represent the Catholic belief. For instance, specific columns represent God the Father, while others represents Jesus Christ as well as the Holy Spirit. The design incorporates symbolism of the church's beliefs and tradition with aesthetics. Moreover, the columns design create a representation of heaven on earth. The synthesis of these two elements - symbolism and contemporary composition, is a perfect example of eclecticism.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the use of eclectic elements and structures create a more popular appeal to building. Eclectic architecture is an evolution of design different from the contemporary design process that is increasingly forming stylistic buildings.
