I am compelled to express great concern regarding how we at GM handle issues related to discrimination at workplaces. I am concern with the fact that nowadays some employees are discriminated or segregated on the basis of their race, religion, places of origin, culture, values and beliefs. These employees are not accorded with the conducive environment that they require for them to produce maximum output for the company.


There is need for the company to curb this menace before it gets out of hand. GM is a well-established company with many branches worldwide. Minor issues such as discrimination should not in any way tarnish this business giant’s reputation. It is all about identifying the issue that the company faces and enforcing steps to inhibit its spread.


I recommend that the company should set up a manual that explain in detail the company’s policies with regards to discrimination at the work place. The manual should contain discrimination rules and regulations that all employees are expected to adhere to. The manual should also denote the actions that would be taken in the event an employee breeches the agreement.


I also recommend that the management of the company should create a platform through which employees can be able to raise or report discrimination cases. The company should also employ an experienced top notch human resource professional who will be able to handle discrimination complaints as they arise.


Thirdly, I recommend that all employees should be educated and sensitized about discrimination and the adverse effects it brings to fellow employees. They should also be encouraged to immediately report any form of harassment they are subjected to. People need to understand that one does not choose his place of origin, race or sexual orientation. Let us respect each other’s uniqueness. There is need to embrace diversity in the workplace.


The Human resource team should also ensure that workplace policies regarding discrimination are properly enforced. The policies should also be reviewed from time to time so as to ensure that its effectiveness is maintained. GM should realize that its employees are its greatest asset thus their issues of concern and interests should be safeguarded.


The management of GM should encourage cooperation and equality in the workplace through the creation of diverse work groups. It should also organize team building exercises occasionally. Through such activities belong will be able to interact and foster better relationships. Cases of discrimination will therefore be reduced as a result.


GM also needs to ensure that it abides by the rule of law of the countries it has set up its branches in. In so doing good business relations would be fostered between the company and the governments in the countries with its branches. In order to meet the legal requirements, the company should also have a business attorney with experience in discrimination policies. This individual will be responsible for developing discrimination policies for all employees. The attorney should make the manual as comprehensive as possible and it should be in line with all state and federal discrimination laws.


We share a collective responsibility of ensuring that everyone is comfortable in their work areas. The company has objectives it has to meet. There is need for all employees to rally together in unison, shun discrimination and work together to achieve the goals set by GM.
