There is the common saying that men are from Mars and women from Venus just to depict how the two genders of the same species are different. The comparison between females and males is not new to us. As a matter of fact, it has been carried out through the years as a means of understanding how the two genders differ and interrelate in common environments. A look into the comparison of the two relieve elements that are the same and others different in regards to physical, psychological and even socially.
Naturally, the most obvious and simplest comparison between females and males is their physical characters. Throughout the evolution process, males have always been the bigger and stronger of the two genders. The male body structure although attributed mostly to the parental genes, is known to be more masculine with bodily features that are bigger especially when compared to those of the female. For example, the shoe size of most men tends to be bigger than that of the average woman. The same can be said in regards to height, body weight and body size.
When it comes to the psychological comparison, Jantz (2014) explains that this is where most of the difference will occur. Females and males brain structures, process and even chemicals will slightly differ as a response to their gender attributions. In reference to the brain structure, Jantz (2014) explains that females have a larger hippocampus and that is why they are good at remembering things and show high emotions. The hippocampus serves as the part of the brain that stores memory and it is also connected with neural. This occurs n both males and females only that for the latter, the size of the organ is not only bigger but the density of neural connections is increased. This helps them to be more sensitive and for their brains to store more sensorial information than men (Price, 2017). There is also the difference in how the right and left hemispheres of the male and female brains are developed during pregnancy. Jantz (2014) explains that for the females, they will have verbal centers in both hemispheres making them good at languages.
In reference to how their brains process, there is the consideration of the gray and white matter. The male brain tends to use seven times more gray matter while the female ten times more white matter Jantz (2014). This brings about the difference in how information and action are portrayed in the two genders. By utilizing more grey matter, it means that males are equipped to fully engage in a single task at any given moment and that is why they are not good at multitasking or paying keen attention. For the females, white matter allows them to exercise more networking capabilities thus easier transition between different tasks at a given moment (Price, 2017).
The chemistry bit of the psychological comparison of females and women can help explain how they react to different stimulus. Both genders produce the same neurochemicals but on different levels. For instance, there is the testosterone that is often higher in men than women thus the explanation of their physical attribution and aggression tendencies. There is also oxytocin which helps in emotions. Given that both females and males produce it, Jantz (2014) explains that women to be more emotional and good at dealing with stress because their bodies mix oxytocin and estrogen to allow for the respective reaction to occur.
Socially, the stereotype has always been to categories females and males based on cultural perspectives. This brings out the element of roles and behavior that females and males ought to portray in a social environment. It has always been the expectation of the society that women take on roles and behave in a manner that does not threaten the position of the male. However, attitudes on this have significantly changed over times and now there are females taking up roles that were once thought suitable only for men and the vice verse is true. Borchers " Gershwin (2012) explains that stereotype roles on gender, especially for females have long influenced their daily lives but with the changes afloat, there seems to be a society that is promoting equality for all slowly taking up shape.
In conclusion, it can be said that females and males will always be different given that their psychological attributions make it so. Yes, both genders fall under the same species meaning there are common characteristics that they will both exhibit. The comparison and contrast of females and males bring about an understanding that there is a stronger aspect of individuality and that we cannot all be the same. We are built and function different and it is something to be proud of. Therefore, taking on the comparison so as to stereotype either of the sexes ought not to be the case. Rather, the analysis should help in understanding both genders thus creating an environment where the aspect of equality can be fostered effectively.
