Comparative Analysis of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Clinic at Campbell University

Campbell University clinic is a community health facility located in Bluies creek, NC 27506 in the U.S. The institution has many physical facilities that are significant for the overall activities within and outside. The clinic has an ultra-modern medical library situated on the second floor of Leon Levine Hall and acts as a source of information for students conducting researches regarding various subjects in the medical field. The research students are presented with an opportunity to have access to full-text databases, professional medical resources, and peer-reviewed medical journals. In addition, the library management grants permission to students to copy and print relevant materials without being supervised. Moreover, the clinic has an anatomy lab which is 5,300 square feet in size and is situated on the fourth floor of Leon Levine hall and can accommodate a maximum of one hundred and fifty students. The lab has a dissection area which can accommodate twenty-eight dissections. In addition, the lab provides an in-lab faculty area that uses live recording technology with a capability of broadcasting the dissection tables. Furthermore, the lab has an internet access that integrates the anatomical science with clinical science. Also, the lab provides other significant tools and services such as the electronic dissection program, diagnostic imaging content, and cross-sectional anatomy services.

The osteopathic manipulative medicine lab, which is 3635 square foot in size and located on the third floor of the Levine Hall, can accommodate over eighty students per lab session. The lab is equipped with high definition video screens, live broadcast technology, natural light and open areas, and faculty teaching station with fixed and portable cameras that play the central role of allowing optimal viewing and recording for review. The other medical facility located within the clinic is the SIM lab (Simulation Center), which is situated on the second floor of Levine Hall and is about 9000 square feet. The lab provides a standardized patient learning experiences and high fidelity simulation for students. Although the institution enjoys adequate, modern medical facilities, I did not feel welcomed but rather repelled when I first visited the location. This can be attributed by the fact that I did not like what I saw since the number of women who were employed by the institution was considerably low when compared to men and the majority of the workers were from the white community. Although the clinic can be regarded as one of the best, there was no diversity within the workplace. For instance, the majority of the top managers were men only.

The assistant director of clinical affairs is responsible for most of the management activities and decision-making processes. Being part of the university, Campbell university clinic is directly managed by the entire administration of the campus. The assistant director of clinical affairs answers to the director. The supervisors/clinical officers are responsible for treatment and ensuring that the resources are prudently utilized. The assistant director is bestowed the following responsibilities:

§ Demonstrate consistent commitment to the mission of the institution and that of the entire university

§ Delegates work and define the levels of monitoring and the expected results

§ Manages different teams

§ Interviews candidates for different positions within the institution

§ Engages staff in different initiatives

§ Support the community by actively engaging in programs that benefit the society

Campbell University Clinic serves the overall population in a bid of improving its health and well-being. However, the institution has its focus mainly on the underserved rural communities, in particular, the North Carolina. The services the clinic provides to the underserved communities are considered of superior quality given by the investment on technology exhibited within the institution. Contrary to the expectation of most people, the services are affordable due to the low cost of medication and diagnosis that is offered. The services are provided to the people through the collaboration of inter-professional. The collaborating team provides an extra-curricular learning environment for all health science programs within the university. The clients are selected by making/scheduling an appointment with the organization. However, an individual must come from the specified region only in order to be provided with the free services or at extremely low cost. However, the facility does not reach to everyone who is eligible for the service due to the fact that an individual has to make an appointment with the firm; which some people may not be able to do so due to a number of issues. Barriers such as constrained operating hours have limited access to the services offered to individuals who have a tight work schedule or are held up during that particular outlined period.

During my observation, I noticed that most of the workers are categorized according to particular social class. For instance, the top management of Campbell University Clinic is only composed of men only, while the other positions are “designed” for women. Although the facility does not have any written code regarding this form of oppression, it is a clear demonstration that the institution understands that there is no balance in the top positions but chooses to ignore that fact. Moreover, the top management team is only composed of the older members of the facility since the institution believes that they are more experienced than the young workers. Other forms of discrimination and oppression observed within the facility include and not limited to following: ableism and sexism. Within the hierarchical organizational structure of Campbell University Clinic, I serve as a supervisor to outdoor community activities such as vaccinations. In this position, I directly report to the assistant director of clinical affairs of the institution. The type of supervision that I was given by the facility’s management solely suits the description of my professionalism. In this position, I am capable of ensuring the underprivileged member of the society that the facility serves are provided with affordable medical care as part of their fundamental human right that is guaranteed by the country’s constitution. Moreover, in such a position, I am able to organize for other essential needs such as nutrition supplements and protective blankets for the community members. Moreover, the position of a supervisor has provided an opportunity for me to directly manage the resources prudently and ensure the services are given to the right recipient and further ensure the resources are utilized prudently.

Although Campbell University Clinic is located within the institution’s health center, most of its operations are dependent on private support though the university plays a major managerial role. For instance, this free clinic recently received a family medicine care grant from the American Academy of Family Physicians. Social workers play the central role in making sure the community, particularly the underprivileged members are granted access to essential needs such as treatment, better nutrition, and clothing. In this regard, although the facility relies on the university health center for most of the resources, it has made significant progress in fighting for human rights by introducing programs that put social workers at the center of everything such as planning and organizing vaccination programs, and nutrition programs among others. The fact that the facility puts social workers at the Centre of most of its activities such as nutrition programs indicates the extent to which they value this special group of workers in the society. Through, social workers, the facility has been able to ensure the uninsured members of the community are treated freely and further referred to the university health center facility at extremely low cost.

Although the facility is determined to offer medical services to the less privileged members of the society in the North Carolina region, the fact that the institution does not value balance within the top management makes it discriminating. Moreover, most of the equipment is not solely owned by the facility but are rather the property of the university. The grants offered to the clinic are from private individuals or institutions; hence, it is difficult to predict or determine the availability of funds throughout the year. In this regard, the facility’s top management has not been able to plan efficiently for an entire year since the funds may get depleted along the way, which in return may force the directors to cut some of the services offered to the target population. In a bid of ensuring that there are sufficient funds, the government, the church, and other stable institutions should be the front-runners in instituting a policy that will serve for the good of the society such as providing funds to facilities like Campbell University Clinic. Moreover, in a bid of ensuring there are equity and fairness in job allocation in most institutions such as Campbell University Clinic, the government should introduce a policy that will ensure that every group or members of the society is represented at every significant position within the various institutions.
