Appeal to Emotions in Scott Stein's Article "Which iPad Should You Buy Now?"

In the article by Scott Stein the author tries to review some of Apple product and offer his opinion on which is the best product between an iPad, and iPad Pro, or even a non-Apple tablet. At the time of this article, many companies were offering technological products, but the iPad was among the best. The author Scott Stein has spent the majority of his time reviewing products, and one of the significant points in this articles is for the consumer to understand that Apple will continue unveiling better products someday. The author argues that while Apple has taken some time to reveal new iPad prod models, this means that the company will disclose better products with time as such for the technology enthusiasts perhaps they can keep waiting. However, for those consumers who want a good basic tablet then the 2018 iPad offers distinct advantages. In the article “Which iPad should you buy now?” published on CNET on June 29, 2018, Scott Stein uses his experience in product review to convince potential consumers on those aspects of the iPad that they should consider before purchasing the various products that Apple has to offer. In such a way, the author appeals to ethos by building his character when he highlights his previous experience in product reviews.

The principal purpose of the article is to convince consumers which is the best choice between iPad 2018 vs. iPad pro. Scott Stein, the author, wrote this article while understanding the nature of products that Apple manufactures and in the wake of various products that the consumer can choose from and include; the old iPad Mini 4, and the new affordable 2018 iPad (Stein). While releasing the product, the company viewed the products as a technological revolution, and while the original Apple iPad was a single one-size fit all device, the newest model offers better qualities for the consumer with specifications such as speed boost and support for Apple’s Pencil stylus. Accordingly, the author is out to convince the audience that 2018 iPad offers better functionality than the previous models as such for the tech enthusiasts they should go for the 2018 iPad if the consumer wants a good basic tablet.

The author has a definite opinion that the next waves of iPad will get something else better like the presence of modular keyboard attachments. While the current models comprise of the A10 processors which according to the author is speedy, with a great battery life of 12 hours plus, the display lacks in qualities that the Pros offer (Stein). By referencing the advantages of the iPad Pro has over the current models, the author manages to appeal to his reader's emotions, and this stirs up the desire to wait for the iPad pros which according to the author, have added advantages. An appeal to pathos stirs up a passion, and by this appeal, the consumers might be inclined to purchase the iPad pro as they become emotionally attached to the promise of a product with better display of which the iPad prod is capable of producing.

The author Scott Stein also appeals to logos by stating the distinct advantages of the iPad pro despite its cost. While comparing the current pro models, the author zeros down on the 10.5 inch iPad pro and gives his verdict that it is the best product among the iPads (Stein). By listing the specifications that comprise of improved functionalities compared to the previous iPads, the author makes an appeal to logos in the form of showing potential iPad buyers what they could have if they choose this product. The author argues that consumers should not mind the cost of the product but check what the product has to offer. Further, as Apple has more products to provide, such as the 2017 9.7 inch model, the consumer can choose this product even if it does not work with Apple’s pencil stylus with a slightly slower processor (Stein). Indeed, at this juncture, the author reiterates on the need for the consumer to wait for the iPad Pro which has added advantages such as Face ID instead of the touch ID, faster CPUs, and more screen space in a smaller iPad body (Stein).

The article “Which iPad should you buy now” does have a few flaws. One weakness is the Scott Stein obvious bias for Apple products and to be specific the 2018 iPad. As a product reviewer, the author might not necessarily have something to gain with the sale of 2018iPad, but he displays this bias by giving a one-sided argument on why the 2018 iPad is the better option compared to the previous models. Just because the author prefers 2018 iPad over the predecessors does not mean that all the readers will share the same view. Scott Stein could have built up his ethos by offering a more succinct review of all the products that Apple has to offer. However, in overall, the author makes a good argument as to why the potential buyers should choose the 2018 iPad over its predecessors. The author, therefore, gives valuable information and facts that the consumers should consider before purchasing the new device.
