Socrates' Views on the Roles of Men and Women
Socrates was emphasizing the obvious roles of men and women. Women are not equal to men in terms of rank and citizenship, and as a result, men are superior to women.
The Changing Roles of Women
However, if men and women are treated fairly in social and political settings, women prefer to do well and outperform men in their positions (Rowbotham 23). From ancient times to the present, men have held a position of dominance over women. Women's positions are undervalued, and proof of disparities of jobs, payment, health education, and freedom is characterized by ancient values.
In the past, women are seen to assume house care roles and inferior to men who are perceived to provide for the family, make decisions and protect the family and the society at large. However, these functions have changed in the modern world where women are joining workforces and providing for their families without necessarily depending on men. Giving women equal rights as men have made women overpower men in assuming more complex roles which were previously isolated from them. Socrates thus had foreseen the effects of civilizations which brought about the massive changes.
Maintaining Control: Hindrances Faced by Women
For men to keep women under control in the modern society, they apply frequent harassments, discriminations, lack of representation, and subjugation. These hindrances have maintained men's status quo and their position in the community.
