The book by Vance is a short autobiography in which the author describes his life since his childhood days and the factors that gave him a chance to escape from the terrible being that he was living. From his experiences, Vance in his article presents the rural community of the whites as a class whereby he analyzes its role in the society, the living conditions of its people, the factors that have contributed to these conditions and sought to give solutions to these problems. In his narrative, Vance includes an analysis of the factors that caused his life to be so devastating and a clear picture of what poverty means and the contributing factors to poverty. He describes himself as a political conservative by recognizing that the government and public policy programs assisted him in paying his college fees.

One of the most significant issues that Vance criticizes is the issue of blaming the government for an individual's fault. In his opinion, poverty is contributed by lack of a realistic vision of a person's life, failure to take the parenting responsibility and other personal factors. For instance, a person who has been under welfare in his entire adult life should not be complaining about the mistreatment of poorly working people. The Stereotypes outlined by Vance are a trap for the conservative policymakers because they bring in the fact that the poor contribute to their poverty by making poor choices and therefore they have no one to blame for their misery. Vance describes the community's sociology as perplexing and complicated whereby the cultural norms of the rural white society struggle to achieve the American dream, but in the process, they vandalize their opportunities. Most of the people who are working get very little which can hardly sustain their families while some do not have the chance to work at all.

Vance suggests that inter-class relationships are an essential as well as emotional support to motivate a child not to give up on the challenges of this life. The motivating factor that drives people is the fact that there is a high probability of a better future and there are numerous opportunities to achieve that. He hopes that his article will be a good source of better morals in the society where individuals realize that each person is capable of making a difference in someone's life by providing opportunities for every person. He concludes by saying that everyone should expect happiness, life and liberty pursuit.
