As a child, Shay resisted the stigma of being ugly, thinking herself a rebel. She thought she was beautiful and didn’t want to be called ugly. Later, she discovered that society had been playing a cruel joke on her and ran off to Smoke. Like Tally, she was a prankster, always pulling pranks on people. As an adult, she’s changed the way people view literacy and beauty.
David’s ugliness is a source of great embarrassment for his wife, Tally. She has a distorted view of her own beauty, believing that she is less beautiful than David. When David calls her beautiful, Tally is overcome with emotion and lets go of her guard. When David kisses her, she stops noticing her imperfections and becomes more open-minded.
