The Use of Digital Technologies in Choreography and Performance

The twenty-first century has witnessed a rise in digital technologies. Digital technology refers to the application of digital resources to create, analyse, communicate and use information in the digital context. Studies have shown that digital technologies have a massive impact on choreography and performance (Zamorska, 2014; Felice, Alaoui & Mackay, 2016). In the context of this research, performances where technologies play a leading role. In the context of choreography, Mullis (2013, p. 112) observes that digital technology is of significant artistic interest. According to Church et al. (2012), digital technologies are sophisticated tools that enhance the chirographer’s art. However, the contribution of these digital technologies to creative work is as limited as the artist’s imagination. Various artists and choreographers used digital technologies differently (Broadhurst & Machon, 2012). The focus of this dissertation will be on the issues arising from the use of digital technologies in dance and choreography and the likely impact on embodiment. These ranges from the nature of the contribution of these technologies to more philosophical concerns raised through their use in performance and choreography.

Research Questions

The research question for this study is twofold:

a) What is the contribution of digital technologies in choreography and performance?

b) In what ways do these digital technologies endanger embodiment?

Research Objectives

a) To understand how digital technologies are used in choreography and performance.

b) To understand the impact of digital technologies on embodiment.

c) To recommend measures that will ensure the use of digital technologies does not endanger embodiment in perforce and choreography.

Dissertation Outline

This dissertation will be divided into five sections.

Section

Description

Introduction

This is the first part of the dissertation. It contains the research aim, question and objectives. It also contains the problem statement.

Literature review

This section reviews previous work by other research. It is used to place the research methodology into an appropriate theoretical framework.

Methodology

This chapter discusses the approaches used to collect the primary and secondary data.

Results

Findings from primary and secondary research are presented in this section.

Conclusion

The conclusion binds the research together from the introduction to the results and offers researcher’s perspective on the findings.
