How does the University of Chicago, as you know it now, satisfy your desire for a particular kind of learning, community, and future? Please address with some specificity your own wishes and how they relate to UChicago.
After hearing many friends talk about positive things about UChicago from the academic meticulousness, the House system to one dollar milkshake Wednesdays, I knew I had to pay a visit. Last summer, I decided to visit the place and the moment I walked in through the courtyard of the Smart Museum of Art,I felt a cool breeze rushing in the climbing plant that blanketed the stunning neo-gothic building, I fell in love with the beautiful campus of UChicago. The first campus tour by our lovely freshman guide depicted wonderful academic environment and exciting student life. With the enjoyment from the tour, I went back the next day to attend the orientation session, which made me more determined to join UChicago.
As a believer of interdisciplinary education, I embrace UChicago’s unique Core System where where I am allowed to choose from a broad range of interdisciplinary courses. Through years of classes and extracurricular involvements, I’ve gained knowledge and become interested in economics, statistics and computer science, which I plan to explore further in college. Of all the schools I researched, UChicago stood out and so far I consider it as the best to institution facilitate my goal of gaining knowledge in three focus areas of my education. I aspire to study in economics major with specialization in data science at The Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics, and computer science minor at Computer Science Department. I envision myself, becoming a true UChicago scholar who is ready for the multi-dimensional world after graduation.
The course listings at UChicago are as enticing as they as the come with many challenges which requires students to be well armed with knowledge.I am very interested to enroll in ECON 21150 Topics in Applied Econometrics class since ,my interest in this subject has been fueled by Professor Ali Hortacsu’s research on empirically evaluating the efficiency of markets. I most have also read his other articles which includes “Deposit Competition and Financial Fragility: Evidence from the US Banking Sector” published on American Economic Review, from these reading I was able to learn that large amounts of uninsured deposits in the U.S. commercial banking system can lead to unstable banks, given the elasticity of deposits to financial distress. By learning ECON 21150, I can see myself building empirical model of auto industry which emphasized the on-demand estimation.
After getting inspired by the research projects by Professor Ben Zhao in the areas of security of online/mobile communities and data-driven models of user behaviors, I plan to take his class ECON23040 – Cryptocurrencies, to learn about cryptographic algorithms, pricing of cryptocurrencies, monetary policy issues and regulatory concerns. In the meantime, I will be working in SAND Lab at UChicago directed by Professor Zhao, building my first bitcoin blockchain.
Research is a fundamental part of the learning process at UChicago. College Center for Research and Fellowships (CCRF) helps undergraduates in the College navigate and involve themselves in the broad array of scholarly research opportunities. At Becker Friedman Institute, I will immerse in the research on Using a rapidly growing wealth of consumer and business data to improve decision-making, which involves economics, statistics and computer science knowledges.
Looking into further, I plan to pursue PhD degree in economics post undergraduate study. The advanced coursework in mathematics, statistics, and computer science I will be persuring economics major with specialization in data science and computer science minor, as well as the researches I will be involved in, will help me to eestablish a solid foundation for my graduate study.
UChicago provides extracurricular activities, in addition to intellectual grow.Which allows me to express myself openly and promote my creatively side, and I joined music community by joining University Wind Ensemble, performing at school and community events. Working as part of the Development Economics Cohort of the Oeconomics club, I hope to research on ties between population growth and economic development. Volunteering at Community Service Recognized Student Organizations (CSRSOs), I plan to serve the community both on and off campus. A short train ride will take me and my friends to downtown Chicago where we can indulge in the magnificent metropolitan culture.
Interdisciplinary study supported by a unique Core System, rigorous classes taught by top notch experts and a beautiful campus with vibrant community - UChicago is where I belong for the next four years.
