The individual's spiritual side can be defined as the impersonal or higher constituent of human nature that helps in finding a sense of peace both in mind and heart. The spiritual side allows the inner values of an individual to guide how to interact with the outside world, show concern for other people, to know what to believe in, and connect with the natural world to make a positive contribution to humanity. Spiritual side provides a sense of aliveness and connection to something greater beyond daily life. The human spiritual side includes emotions, judgment, passions, intellect, insight, understanding, and creativity.

A critical aspect of the spiritual side of an individual can be seen in the process of personal development which involves growth and change. As a person grows and matures, he starts to develop his value system. The reason is that as the individual grows, he realizes what pleases and gives him peace. The spiritual side of a person brings a connection with something beyond the usual life and makes ones to feel that he or she has a purpose to live. A life which is devoid of purpose and meaning is empty and futile. Children usually adopt the values of their parents or guardians, but as they mature they discover their passions and values which forms part of an identity. Some individuals may maintain the values of their parents even after maturity, however, the acceptable ways of life may vary due to the ever-changing world. The physical environment where an individual lives could be chaotic and full of desperation, but the spiritual side of a person enables him to believe and see beyond the natural dimension of the world.
