Margaret Atwood, a Canadian resident, wrote the novel. This was written and published in 1995. This story is set in New England after an authoritarian and Christian theocracy that overthrew the United States government (Atwood, pg. 6). The book follows the journey of the handmaid Offred, stressing Fred’s possessive character because handmaids are prohibited from using their names or echoing the male or master whom they serve.
The plot delves into the themes of women exposed to sexism in a patriarchal culture, as well as the various ways in which these women pursue individualism and liberation (Taylor, pg. 5). The novel’s title reflects the necessary parts of Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, a series of the stories connected.

This tale is designed into two parts, night and other different occasions. The novel can be said as a dual narrative, Offred’s fiction, and the Handmaid’s tales. The night part is about Offred, and the rest such as household, waiting room, shopping, etc. are the narratives describing the possible life of each Handmaid, although from Offred’s perspectives (Atwood, pg. 10). In these sections, Offred sails between the past and present as she says of the occasions that lead up to the collapse of the rights of the women and the current information in the life she lives.

She pressed back her disgust, and remembered aunt Lydia’s words on how ordinary the life of Gilead has resulted. The statement from Aunt Lydia reflected the totalitarian state authority like Gilead transforming natural mankind responses like the blankness’ execution transforming horror into normalcy (Atwood, pg. 11). The words from aunt Lydia proposed that Gilead succeeded not only by earning trust from individual with the right ways but made them forget another world that how they expect.

I would like to believe this is a story I’m telling. I need to believe it. I must believe it. Those who can believe that such stories are only stories have a better chance. If it’s a story I’m telling, then I have control over the ending. Then there will be an ending, to the story, and real life will come after it. I can pick up where I left off.

Theis reflects Offred’s fiction, readers, the lost home, and herself state’s connection. The story suggested that Offred recounted not the occasions from a far, considering the past in her life. Instead, she describes Gilead’s horror as a daily experience. The act of narrating Offred’s fiction made her rebel her community (Taylor, pg. 14). Gilead wanted ladies silenced whereas Offred spoke out although he was an existing leader. Gilead denied women’s control on their future, but Offred ‘s created of a narrative and gave what she called the ending control.

I used to think of my body as an instrument, of pleasure, or a means of transportation, or an implement for the accomplishment of my will. Now the flesh arranges itself differently. I’m a cloud, congealed around a central object, the shape of a pear, which is hard and more real than I am and glows red within its translucent wrapping.

Thequote is said as Offred sat in the bathroom, no clothes, and contrasted t she the manner thought about herself to the way she currently felt about herself (Taylor, pg. 13). Previously, her body was a tool, a self-extension, now her self-doesn’t matter anymore and her central object, the womb, is what makes her vital because it can bear her children.

He was not a monster, to her. Probably he had some endearing trait: he whistled, offkey, in the shower, had yen for truffles, and he called his dog Liebchen and made it sit up for little pieces of raw steak. How easy it is to invent the humanity, for anyone at all. What an available temptation.

Offred thinks of documentaries she saw about a lady, a nazi death camp guard’s mistress. She recalled how the lady pressured that her fiancé was never a monster and compared her condition as she spent the nights with the commander and finally loved him. The commander is seen as a right person (Atwood, pg. 17). He seemed kind, genial, friendly and courtly to Offred. He was yet a source of her oppressions directly as her commanding officer and indirectly via duty.

In conclusion, the novel acquired the Governor General’s Award in and in the Arthur C in was nominated in the Nebula Awards, the Booker prizes in 1986 and the Prometheus awards in 1987. It was book played in the film in 1990, Opera 2000, a series in television and other Medias. It is the film that no one would like to miss.
