The Effects of Helicopter Parenting on the Academic Performance of Adolescents

This piece was completed according to the instructions from the professor with the help from Mr. Peterson of the Adler University, Chicago. Much gratitude to him for his support.

Helicopter Parent

Every parent is unique in their ways of rearing children and contribute to the difference in behaviors and personalities. One of the categories is the helicopter parent where a parent (either father or mother), is extremely concerned with the problems and issues their children face and especially schools. This way of raising a child is common in the present times. An example of this occurred in the life of my friend called Jeremy. His mother used to sleep late writing an essay for him and other assignments. The behavior affected the manner in which Jeremy did school activities, leading to poor performance in his tests. As time passed, his mother failed to encourage autonomy in him. According to Schiffrin and Liss (2017), parents need to impart skills to their children, where they would be allowed to face new challenged as well as failing some test, but they are sure to always love them. Doing so encourage them to perform difficult tasks on their own and therefore, improve their academic results. Fostering a sense of attaining good grades is by far much important than doing every bit of assignment on behalf of teens. Without making their own choice, such objectives are difficult to attain.

In their research, Schiffrin and Liss (2017) hypothesized that there is some degree of positive correlation between reported helicopter parenting from children and mothers. However, according to the study, the expected difference between the report from parents and children was insignificant. They also supposed that reports on parenting would cause an increase in the two performance orientations which are performance approach and performance avoidance. More importantly, they expected the reports from the teens to have a substantial impact on the outcome of the child compared to those from parents. When compared with the King Chapter, I have learned that pilot parenting has a negative impact on the whole process of academic development, particularly when it comes to acquiring new skills from different materials despite the difficulty involved.

Generally, pilot parenting has adverse effects both in the health of adolescents, behavior and their performance. For instance, when a parent has a total control of the manner in which a child behaves, he/she may fail to regulate behavior since parents take a central position in determining the conducts of children. Academically, they fail to handle difficult assignment because they become over-dependent on other people for these and other responsibilities of a learner. In the extreme, a teenager may undergo negative psychological problems including anxiety and depression.

For better results, motivation should be considered an integral part of child development. Two major forms of motivations come to play in the life of individuals, including intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. While the two are critical in human development and day-to-day activities, the intrinsic is much richer because it is inspired by the meaningful achievement of a specific goal. As a result, scholars become innovative in their education and future profession. When guided by the desire to achieve the desired goal, learners get motivated. The other one is only causing propulsion of individual based on some external benefits and rewards.

The study concludes that there are negative impacts of the helicopter parenting results from parents’ perception that teens need to be guided in everything they do, even in their education. As a result, learners end up experiencing a diminishing satisfaction with the lives the lead. Non-the less, the study is not without limitations. First, the research was done in a general way without considering differences among individuals based on their gender. For better results, authors suggest future investigators should devote themselves to understanding how males and females differ in terms of the effects of pilot parenting on them. The second limitation of the investigation is that it emphasizes the impact of the maternal pilot behaviors on children’s academic attainment without focusing on male pilot parents. Schiffrin and Liss (2017) propose further studies to be conducted in the future to assess the impact of both male and female pilot parents on child’s school engagement. Male helicopter parenting in some cases tends to be felt more than that of the female. Hence, the article is in line with how the society perceives mothers’ involvement in adversely impacting self-esteem. As a result, mothers are seen by society as bad parents as far as nurturing the behavior of children is concerned, while male parents are considered effective in raising academically successful learners.

After reading the information conveyed by the article, it clearly shows that there are opportunities for expanding on the knowledge base in academic entitlement. My group would wish to see researchers inquire into, is the impact of technology in exacerbating pilot parenting. In my views, technology has a significant impact on this kind of parenting. For a better understanding of the role of applied science in the whole process of parenting and ways of reducing adverse effects. Moreover, it would be wise to understand the consequences of pilot parenting in contributing to unethical academic practices including cheating. The reason for the interest in this aspect considering the teens fail to learn on their own since many academic activities are performed on their behalf.
