To Kill a Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic novel by Harper Lee about racism in the South. The main character, Tom Robinson, is a black man who is falsely accused of raping a young girl. When he is found guilty, he is shot 17 times. Throughout the novel, he shows his humanity and is eventually accepted by the community. The novel is filled with symbols of racism and racial injustice, and it shows that we must be willing to accept and respect others' differences.

Prejudice and Color

Despite the fact that they are black and white, the two men are juxtaposed as if to demonstrate how human prejudice and color cannot prevent justice. The title, To Kill a Mockingbird, is a metaphor for the men and the town itself. A mockingbird is shot, while another is forced to kill. Scout's character grows up knowing that humans are not perfect, and she learns to live with a conscience without misanthropy.

Characters

The novel's central character, Tom Robinson, is an African-American man who has three children with Helen. He is accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. In response to the allegations, he hires the lawyer Atticus Finch. Although Atticus is an old friend of the Robinsons, he does not believe in his friend's guilt and tries to convince the judge to let Robinson go.

Helen Robinson is the wife of Tom Robinson and mother of his three children. She is employed by Link Deas after Tom's death. During the trial, Bob Ewell tries to intimidate her and make her work for him. But after learning about Helen's situation, Bob stops harassing her. Helen Robinson explains the hardships she has gone through in relation to the case of Tom Robinson. Her presence in the book makes it a must-read.

Setting

The plot of Setting for Tom Robinson takes place in 1950s Maycomb, Mississippi. Mayella Violet Ewell is the oldest of eight children and grows red geraniums outside her house. With no human contact, Mayella is desperate to find love, and so she seduces black man Tom Robinson, sending her siblings to get ice cream. Unfortunately, her father catches her seduction attempt and punishes her, beating her severely. Afterwards, she informs Sheriff Heck Tate and he arrests Tom.

Set in the 1930s, Maycomb is a town with a small population of black people. The town is considered to be a "troublesome" place, and Tom Robinson is a victim of it. However, his defense is strong enough to hold up under scrutiny. Atticus tries to instill moral values in his children, but the white community does not approve. As a result, his sons Jem and Scout are taunted by the white community. Later, Atticus is asked by the sheriff to shoot a rabid dog.

Theme

The To Kill a Mockingbird book is a novel about the conflict between good and evil. Throughout the book, Atticus Finch and his two children believe that people are good, but in the end, they realize that evil is not contained. It destroys people and causes emotional death. Atticus also sees the goodness in bad people, and he decides to fight the bad people to get back their respect and dignity.

Innocence plays a large role in the novel, as Scout and Jem are symbols of innocence. As the novel progresses, the characters are confronted with the loss of their innocence as a result of racial discrimination and biased social morality. Because of this, these characters become increasingly vulnerable. The unjust system of society mocks the integrity of the characters. But, ultimately, this theme is not only present in the novel.
