In 1793, Sam Houston was conceived. He made touch with a tribe of Cherokee Indians. In 1830, he wed Tiana Rodgers, a Cherokee woman, and started representing the Cherokee Nation and other Native Americans in Indian matters in Washington, D.C.
Additionally, his views on slavery placed him at odds with the southern states of the union. Houston opposed the spread of slavery into the new areas despite being a slave owner himself. Sam Houston moved in with Cherokees when he was a young boy in Tennessee, and he stayed friends with them and an advocate for them all of his life. For example, The Cherokees gave him the Indian name of "The Raven"… In 1832, after Congressman William Stanberry of Ohio condemned Houston in an open newspaper, Sam Houston met Stanberry on the street and beat him with a stick; Sam
Houston is the only person to date to work for as governor of two different states. Sam Houston spent most of his developmental years in Tennessee. He was a careless and intolerant youth.He also consumed much time away from development in Cherokee country.The Cherokee nation endorsed Sam Houston where he learned their language and was mentored by a Cherokee chief. He spent his early 20s in the army, where he was injured in a fight with the Creek Indians, meeting directed by General Andrew Jackson. In conclusion, the bond between Sam Houston and the Cherokee people grew stronger and was also an activist for the tribe.
Sam Houston's wisdom and moral courage
First, Houston became caught up in the struggle, helping to organize a provisional Anglo government, and growing elected commander in chief of the Texas army. Houston navigated a series of skirmishes and hostilities with common sense and thoughtfulness. General Santa Anna of Mexico invaded Texas intent to break up the government, and Houston defeated and captured Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto, cementing his place in Texas history (Haley and James 79). He was a hero in the struggle for Texas independence, and later he served the state as U.S. Senator and Governor. Being a lawyer, Sam Houston became friends with Jackson and became a campaign manager and adviser in Jackson's presidential campaign. Houston became a U.S. Representative and then governor of Tennessee.
Secondly, Houston was next elected to the U.S. Senate. He continued to work toward invasion, which was achieved. In his last years, he was elected governor of Texas. Despite all of his efforts, Texas seceded during his term, and when he refused to take an oath of loyalty to the Confederacy, Houston was forced from office.
Thirdly, Houston was soon elected president of Texas, and he dealt with such things as Texas' growing debt, Indian conflicts, and the threat of Mexico. He preached justice for the Indians and peace with Mexico, both very unpopular views (Henson and Swett 120). He also played a clever political game to annex Texas with the United States, playing off Great Britain and the United States' loathing towards each other. Governor of two states, president of an independent republic, and for thirteen years a United States senator, Sam Houston copied a life of great adventure, frequent controversy, and lasting achievement. In summary, Sam's life history narrates a life of encouragement, full of teachings and achievements for a democratic society.
Lifestyle marriage between Margaret Lea and Sam Houston
According to Moore and Stephen (198), Margaret Lea got married to Samuel Houston on May 9, 1840. Houston by then was 47 years of age and got married for the third time. Margaret Lea was 21 years of age by then and was the daughter of planters Marion, Alabama. The couple gave birth to eight children. Houston lived a life of drunkenness; this made his convincing wife, to persuade him to stop drinking. They resided in Trinity Bay despite having numerous houses.
In the year1854 Margaret managed to convert Houston to the Baptist church with the assistance of Baines, This took her 14 years to go through, and Houston underwent adult baptism. People from neighboring communities came to Independence, Texas to witness the event. On November 19, 1854, Houston was baptized by Rev. Rufus C. Burleson by immersion in Little Rocky Creek, two miles southeast of Independence. The baptismal site is near a roadside historical marker by the Texas Historical Commission located on Farm to Market Road 50 at Sam Houston Road.
In 1862, Houston returned to Huntsville, Texas, and rented the Steamboat House. His health deteriorated in 1863 due to a persistent cough. In mid-July, Houston developed pneumonia (James and Marquis 64). He died on July 26, 1863, at Steamboat House due to persistent pneumonia, with his wife Margaret by his side. After her death, Margaret was buried in Independence at her family's cemetery.
In conclusion, Margaret Lea played a vital role in the transformation of Sam Houston's life from a reckless, aggravated, licentious and much drunkard man to a perfectly responsible, God-fearing and dedicated person. Inside the historical context of the developing West, Houston’s story is not only one of bravery and strength, but also supports an understanding of the possibilities and restrictions of supremacy in a Self-governing society.
