I would wish to explore call combinations employed by gorillas’ (Gorilla beringei beringi) for an incoming threat or/and danger. The researcher’s filed work would come with a focused observation of gorillas to know their behaviour.
Methods and Research Approach
The researcher would use participant observation as a knowledge collection method for the research. A minimum of seven groups of gorillas would be considered for the observation at different locations including natural (sanctuary) also as manmade (zoo) to be studied for seven days. The researcher would specialise in one group of gorillas for one day so as to urge the specified data for interpretation.
However, it's important to mention that this study would focus on the communication strategies used by the gorillas’ during an incoming threat. Primate communication is essential to understand for the researcher because of the complexity of the vocalisations of the call combinations of the primates. The proposed research methodology would enable an in-depth understanding of the communication strategies employed by the gorillas’ during a threat. It would be applied as a focussed filed observation.Challenges and Possible Ethical ConcernsI would need to get permission to study the gorillas for both the natural as well as the non-natural setting. Besides, the researcher’s presence would alter the behaviour of the gorillas, and even they can receive the researcher as a possible threat. Also, understanding the call combinations would itself be a big challenge to get through. Study ReportingThe study is would take a maximum of one month to complete. Though limited in its scope, the study would be able to make a small contribution towards the understanding of primates’ communication strategies.
