Reform of Texas' Education Budgeting System

Since education forms one of Texas' largest expenses, I think it is time to reform Texas' education/ budgeting system. Education forms the foundation of an informed democracy like Texas and the key to lifelong opportunities. Therefore, Texas relies on its education system to promote shared responsibility, as well as create a talented workforce. However, for Texas’ state government to fulfill its promise to future generations of young Texans, it must ensure appropriate allocation of public funds, especially in education to encourage quality education irrespective of the students’ backgrounds (Springer " Taylor, 2016).

Reforming the state’s budgeting system will ensure that the state government of Texas spends just enough money to cater for young Texans educational needs as required by the law. That will prevent over-badgering or misappropriation of the education budget, which leads to misuse of public funds that would otherwise be put into other productive activities (Springer " Taylor, 2016). The Texas Constitution guarantees the right to education. However, such a constitutional provision should not be misinterpreted to imply injection of more than the necessary funds in the education sector (Springer " Taylor, 2016).

It is therefore essential for the Texas government to review its budget system as a means of meeting the rising needs of the Texan people through appropriate allocation of public money in every sector. The Texas government should appreciate the role played by the Foundation School Program to ensure that the distribution of education funds is based on a set of laws and formulas (Springer " Taylor, 2016). It is also essential for the Texas government to understand that the basic allotment forms the basis or foundation for education finance formulas, and an important step towards addressing concerns relating to budget misappropriation (Springer " Taylor, 2016).
