Reading to Intervention (RTI)

The term Reading to Intervention (RTI) describes a procedure used to redirect educational resources away from the grouping of students with disabilities and toward evaluation and teaching. It is most effective when used with young children, when literacy and language abilities are still actively being developed. RTI is described by the National Center for Response to Intervention as an intervention strategy used in a school-wide setting to raise students' academic performance while lowering their problems. (Waite, n.d). As a result, RTI is a prevention system rather than a reporting system.

RTI employs a multi-tiered strategy. Three tiers may be used to implement an RTI in a particular school. The first level involves general education where all children in a school begin. It helps determine if children respond to instructions at the same rate with their peers. The second tier will involve the provision of early intervention services to children who did not respond well to the first tier. The final tier involves intensive intervention which is done on children who require special education (Dickman, 2006).

Reading disability can be identified when RTI is used. The educator's first screen students for potential problems after which they provide time for different reading instructions to the students. The students who score lows during screening are provided with more intensive instructions and progress monitored. Finally, the educator gives daily instructions to the student to promote growth in children who fail to improve after a reasonable time.

Three questions:

i. Is RTI a hundred percent effective?

ii. What happens if the child does not respond to RTI?

iii. Which other fields can RTI be practiced?
