It was an important concept of or project aimed at international development. In essence, it came about as a result of social and political processes that were shaped by Civil Rights Movements as well as Women's Rights Movements. This includes nationalistic and anticolonial struggles that were happening in the geopolitical contestations as well as the global south mainly during the Cold war (Shenila, 93).



It is imperative to note that in the United States, such issues were highlighted during the 1960s through the 1970s when sexual minorities, organized women groups as well as the African American Communities begun advocating for their rights and equality (Shenila, 98).
