Martin Parr's The Last Resort
In the summer of 1983, Martin Parr took a series of forty photographs in New Brighton, Merseyside. These were taken using a medium-format camera and daylight flash. They were an early example of saturated colour photography, and were influenced by the work of Garry Winogrand and William Eggleston. The photographs are now highly collectible and have received rave reviews. In addition, there's a new essay by Gerry Badger on this iconic work.
The seaside has a special place in Parr's work
He visited the area with his grandfather frequently, and later returned to it as a photographer. The seaside represents a traditional English holiday, as well as an exceptional public space. It blends absurdities of general human behaviour with local eccentricities, and provides a relaxing environment where people can enjoy themselves and experiment with the camera.
