Personal Health Research Paper

Introduction

Some of the modern lifestyle medical problems include diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. The fact that three generations of my family have the condition has piqued my curiosity in the topic. The three illnesses are present in my mother, grandmother, and great grandma. When I was a young kid, I noticed that my mother was gaining weight, which I found strange given the rate at which she was doing so. She was a frequent visitor to the medical facility, which made me curious as time went on. My curiosity pushed me to the realization that she was suffering from three medical conditions which affected my great grandmother and my grandmother. Using this paper, I intend to establish the causes of diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. More so, I will point out the connection between the three conditions and how to protect myself from the medical conditions.

Obesity and Weight Gain

One of the most prominent signs of obesity is additional weight gain. Obesity occurs when the patient has a large intake of carbohydrates. At home, my mother frequently cooked foods with high levels of fats such as chips and brown bread. Such foods have a high amount of energy. Such foods require the consumer to perform activities that consume the energy. Failure to perform such activities leads to deposition of fats on the bodies of the consumers leading to weight gain. At home, we have a house help who helps around in conducting most of the house chores. Therefore, my mother does not work a lot failing to utilize the energy in her body. As such, she gained weight very fast making her obese. After frequent visits to the doctor, the doctor advised her to engage in activities that consume more energy to allow the body to utilize the available energy.

High Blood Pressure and Weight Gain

Apart from obesity, my mother, grandmother and great grandmother suffer from high blood pressure. Under normal circumstances, the blood pressure of a human being should be between 120/80 and 140/90 (Tandon 168). My mother had a blood pressure of 145/92. Such a level indicates a deviation from the normal levels. The doctor explained that the addition of weight led to constriction of the veins making the blood flow at a higher pressure. The explanation brought me to the realization that obesity is the trigger to high blood pressure in my family's case. When my mother consumed foods rich in carbohydrates and fats, the deposition of fats led to the addition of weight constricting the veins making the blood flow faster than normal. Therefore, the solution to obesity was a step towards the solution to high blood pressure. Both medical conditions originated from the choice of food consumed in the family.

Diabetes and Weight Gain

Apart from obesity and high blood pressure, my mother, my grandmother and great grandmother have diabetes. Diabetes results from the lack of insulin in the blood leading to the high amount of glucose in the blood. The function of insulin is to reduce the amount of glucose in the blood. The cause of diabetes for my mother was the high amount of weight. The doctor pointed out that the weight made her body resistant to insulin due to the chemicals produced by the abdominal fats. From the conditions, my mother always complains of fatigues and blurred vision especially after sitting down for long (Mayo Clinic 1). When she gets a minor wound, the wound takes longer to heal raising the risks for more infections. I recall my grandmother complaining of the same characteristics that my mother complains. Sometimes, she complains of frequent headaches that force her to seek medication frequently.

Conclusion

A keen consideration of the conditions affecting my mother, my grandmother and my great grandmother leads me to the realization that the primary cause of the conditions is the foods consumed. My mom loves junk food such as brown bread and French fries which are the same foods eaten by my grandmother. The foods contain high amounts of fat. The fats consumed lead to additional weight due to deposition of the fat below the skin. The foods consumed are vital for health stability. It is important to eat a balanced diet to avoid exposure of the body to excessive nutrients. As advised by the doctor, it is healthy to exercise frequently to ensure the body uses the available nutrient before additional nutrients which are not healthy (Vickers 8).

The research enabled me to pinpoint the source of the condition as the food consumed. Foods rich in carbohydrates such as brown bread and French fries may cause obesity if consumed frequently. I was able to learn that obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes are interconnected conditions. Excessive intake of fats and carbohydrates leads to obesity which constricts the veins causing high blood pressure. The body fats, especially in the belly, affect the production of insulin leading to diabetes. Therefore, I find it safe to conclude that the three medical conditions result from too much intake of carbohydrates and fats. Rectifying the situation would require frequent exercise to utilize the energy in the body and consumption of balanced diet to avoid accumulation of fats in the body. The conditions are dangerous and need constant medical checkups to attain healthy bodies.
