Understanding occupational safety and health
Understanding occupational safety and health is essential for preventing workplace accidents and the spread of communicable illnesses in both government policy and corporate practice. Although the program was first thought to be technological issues that needed technical fixes, several organizations have now realized the need to improve it. In contrast to earlier times, when its main focus was technical inspections, it now includes organizational, human factors, and behavioral difficulties. A effective OSH system is a crucial component of overall business operations since it is just as necessary as any other component for the organization to be successful. Key areas that lead the success of OSH system include managers’ commitment and employees’ involvement. Other areas are compliance with OSH regulations, continuous training of major stakeholders, and improvement of the system.
The Coca-Cola and OSH
One of the companies that have successfully implemented OSH is the Coca-Cola. The management of Coca-Cola believes that a safe and healthy workplace is an essential right to its workers, visitors, and the public. The company’s Operating Requirements defines the policies, standards, and necessities for managing safety throughout its operations to help in achieving a safe working environment. The systems are being frequently improved with regards to emerging issues at workplaces and alignment with top global requirements and consensus standards. International Safety and Environmental regulations are also internalized to fit on specific situations in the company. Besides, safety training forms a key theme of the company engagement for OSH programs. The company trains its suppliers and employees on a regular basis to make them aware of possible risks at workplaces and how to respond in case of an accident. The building capabilities and technical policies are also in place to investigate building capabilities for all its premises (Ahmed & Sekhar, 2014).
