The government is the state organ in charge of national security. This position is specifically assigned to the government's executive branch. The executive branch of the government is led by the president, and from this vantage point, the president is primarily in charge of national security. National protection is essentially the principle that the government should protect its people from national problems as a whole. Terrorism, malnutrition, border protection, and national stability are examples of these crises.
Terrorism is a current topic that has sparked heated discussions over national security. This has become an issue due to the several instances of terrorism activities that have plagued the United States. There have been shootouts at schools, in clubs and in public spaces across the United States.
Competing Solutions
The two competing solutions to this problem are; the conservative approach and the liberal approach. The republicans are conservative on how to deal with the issue. They argue that the matter can be solved by instituting radical steps such as banning Muslims from entry into the United States. The democrats, on the other hand, propose liberal methods that emphasize on human rights and avoid discrimination based on religion (Yougov.com).
Preferable Solution
The preferable solution is the liberal one. It is necessary to follow due process even in the face of adversity and doubt. The republicans are correct on this; as much it eliminates discrimination and possibly allows infiltration of terrorists, it also means that the country adheres to the rule of law. The latter is preferable and prevents the country from behaving like the extremist terrorists that they want to stop.
Federal Government Responsibility
The federal government is responsible for ensuring that there are effective policies that can guide the local and state governments in combating terrorism. It is the one to set an example for the lower governments to follow. The federal government is responsible for liaising with the national security bodies such as the national security agency and the Federal Bureau of investigations. This coordination is critical for the effective protection of the citizens. Second, the federal government is capable of marshaling the defense department to respond to national threats. It is the best-positioned government to deal with border security as well as military threats. It is the government that must set the policies that govern national security. Additionally, it is responsible for liaising with external security agencies from foreign countries (O'Hanion).
State Government and Local Government Responsibility
The state government is largely responsible for pursuing matters of national security the fall within its jurisdiction. At this point, the state government would liaise with the federal government and hand over the matter or the suspect. The same matter applies to the local governments. They may deal with matters that fall within their jurisdiction but have to hand over the suspects or the matters to the federal government which has far reach and ample capabilities to address matters of national security.
