Morality and Humanity

The Subject of Giving as an Individual vs. a Billionaire

The subject matter on what to give as an individual in comparison to what a billionaire have to intrigue the mind of any person who has some moral characters. For instance, morality depends on the cultural practices, individual beliefs, and community norms, which make up the environment that one grows up. Hence, what to provide is a personal decision that is dependent on the anticipated purpose that the giving is supposed to serve. A fundamental question that crosses one’s idea regards understanding what the human life is worth and what quantity of money if it were possible should be an equivalent. This paper, therefore, highlights what I can do to help others using Peter Singer’s “What should a billionaire give and what should you” as a lens text.

The Value of Human Lives

In observing the fundamental ideologies posed by Singer in order to respond to what I should do to help others, I am of the opinion that it does not matter what I give but rather the value made out of offer that I make to help. For instance, Singer noted that approximately half a million children die from rotavirus caused by diarrhea. On the other hand, millions of children die of preventable diseases that could be prevented in the developing worlds. In this view, I understand that lives of the individual children whether in the United States or the developing states should be treated with equality and that their lives matter. Therefore, I would give any form of help that can lead to solving such health problem. It would not matter to me what I give but what the purpose and number of lives saved by what I would have given.

Billionaires and the Importance of Personal Giving

The advancement in technology, which is the main driver for globalization, nonetheless affords people social status. In this sense, some people are billionaires while others live below a dollar. Those living below a dollar a day witnessed in developing countries struggle to afford life’s basic needs. For example, philanthropist billionaires such as Bill Gates and Warren have more than enough money to afford every life desire with an exception of life. Therefore, it is with much honor to note that they understand that life is precious and that no amount of money can afford. As such, they have offered to offer financial help to health institutions with the expectation of saving lives by preventing them from contacting the fatal diseases. Similarly, I may not be able to offer a financial help of their equivalence but would give what is within my rich to make a difference.

Moral Obligations and Personal Giving

The decision to give and what to give in my view should not be an act of duty or obligation. Instead, I find it morally right to help others in need if I can, however, little or more that might be. In reference to Peter Singer that an act qualifies to be moral only when it is done out of a sense of duty, billionaires have no obligation to give the same way I do. Thus, a billionaire can help bridge the gap of problems affecting others based on what they feel can help in comparison to what I would feel maybe worth correcting a certain situation that puts others to experience problems.

The Morality of Giving

Precisely, giving is independent of the social class but rather an act of moral attachment and feeling to the state of society. What a billion should give and what I should in order to help others not be compared since the billionaire and I have no responsibility and not obliged to give. Giving is a moral act that an individual identifies with to help others from their hearts and can never be measured as well as compared.
